We’re officially down to eight teams in Europe’s most prized competition as Manchester City welcomes Atletico Madrid to the Etihad in the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday. The first leg kick-off is scheduled for 3:00PM EST.

The Citizens breezed through the Round of 16 with ease, beating Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon 5-0 on aggregate. Atleti meanwhile, shocked Manchester United thanks to a 1-0 victory in the second leg at Old Trafford.

This is the first-ever meeting in Europe between City and Atletico, but Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone have clashed before in their managerial careers, with the Spaniard winning twice and losing once.

City in Dominant Form

The Citizens are just one point above Liverpool for top spot in the Premier League, but they’re playing fine football right now. Pep’s men have gone seven games unbeaten across all competitions, conceding just two times during that span. Following the international break, City also got right back to business over the weekend with a 2-0 win against Burnley.

Frankly, it should’ve been a wider margin of victory, with the visitors completely controlling this fixture. Kevin De Bruyne bagged an early opener with a smashing volley, then just minutes later Raheem Sterling notched his second assist of the day with a beautiful team goal finished off by Ilkay Gundogan.

When it comes to Europe, Man City hasn’t exactly been tested yet. PSG made their lives tough at times in the group stages but the Sky Blues still managed to finish top. Sporting was frankly no competition for Guardiola’s squad either, running riot on them in the first leg with five goals. Atleti isn’t the most consistent, but their form has improved immensely as of late. City won’t be taking them for granted.

Atletico Facing Possible Injury Scare

The La Liga title-holders are coming off a terrific 4-1 win against Alaves where Joao Felix and Luis Suarez both netted a brace apiece, but the side was handed a massive injury blow which could have major implications for Tuesday. Uruguayan center-back Jose Gimenez limped off with just minutes left on Saturday. It’s unknown if he will miss out versus City, but if he does, the Atletico backline will be in trouble.

Nevertheless, Simeone’s men have fired themselves right back into the top-four in Spain, notching six straight league wins and seven across all competitions. After playing to a 1-1 draw with the Red Devils in the first leg at Wanda Metropolitano, Renan Lodi’s first-half header in the return fixture at the Theatre of Dreams was enough to end United’s European dreams and send Cristiano Ronaldo home early once again.

Atleti will be seeking to pull off the double over both Manchester teams, becoming the first club since Juventus in 1976-1977 to play United and City in the knockouts. The Old Lady ultimately went on to win the UEFA Cup that year. Despite being a heavy underdog, the visitors will be brimful of confidence because of their impressive winning run. A big-name opponent won’t intimidate them either after shocking Liverpool in the 2019/20 Round of 16.

Manchester City vs Atletico Madrid Prediction

Although Atleti is enjoying a fine run of form, the proof is in the pudding. They struggle to score goals in Europe and City is rock solid defensively. Even in Gimenez does play, he won’t likely be at 100%, either. This will hurt them against a Manchester attack that is full of quality.

The hosts are also practically unbeatable on home soil. The moneyline doesn’t offer a lot of value, but City to win and keep a clean sheet is worth it.
