The two old enemies of English soccer meet at Old Trafford on Thursday, May 13, kick-off at 3:15 pm EST; a game originally scheduled for May 2 but which was canceled after United fans stormed their stadium in protest at the club’s owners and their desire to join the ill-fated European Super League.

While United’s quest to keep the EPL title race alive ended on Tuesday when they were beaten at home by Leicester, there will still be an edge to this as Liverpool desperately needs a win to give themselves a chance of Champions League soccer next season.

United’s Charge Ended by The Foxes

United’s home defeat by Leicester City on Tuesday signaled the end of the 2020-21 EPL title race, with Man City’s ten-point lead at the top now insurmountable. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men pushed the Citizens hard in the latter stages of the season, but the gap has always been far too big for them to mount a realistic challenge, and keeping hold of second place has always been the more realistic target.

With this Liverpool game coming just 48 hours after the clash with Leicester, Solskjaer chose to ring the changes on Tuesday night and made no fewer than 10 changes to the team that won at Aston Villa on Sunday. Against a Leicester team battling to claim the fourth Champions League place, after being in pole position all season, United went behind early on before pulling level through Mason Greenwood, but with such a relatively inexperienced Red Devils lineup, it was no big surprise when the Foxes claimed a late winner.

Solskjaer to Bring Back the Big Guns

What is certain is that Solskjaer will play his strongest team against Liverpool, and the big names will be back. The unfamiliar names of Tuesday night – Amad Diallo, Anthony Elanga, Alex Telles, etc – will have benefited from the experience, but will likely be watching from the sidelines as the likes of Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, and Edison Cavani return.

With Leicester having closed the gap between themselves in third and United in second to four points, Solskjaer will expect his troops to put their foot on the gas again against Liverpool.

Klopp’s Men on a Roll

For the Reds of Anfield, it will be a huge night in Manchester. Not only is it a clash with their biggest and most bitter rivals, but they are also fighting, it seems, a losing battle to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Jurgen Klopp’s men have made a feeble attempt to defend their EPL crown – precipitated by losing Virgil van Dijk to a season-ending injury early on in the campaign – and for large chunks of the season have been well off the pace, but a recent improved run has given them at least a chance of claiming fourth place.

In fact, Klopp’s men head to Old Trafford on the back of a six-game unbeaten run in the league and have not lost since that shock home defeat to relegated Fulham back on March 7. They will, however, be stung by having to hand the trophy over to Manchester City, especially after having made such a lame attempt to defend it.

Manchester United vs Liverpool Best Bets

While Solskjaer rested some of his players on Tuesday night, it has still been a very hectic schedule for the Red Devils, whereas Liverpool, by contrast, has not played since Saturday. This, together with Liverpool’s recent good form, lends itself to the away win and as a result, there is value in the +138. Consider too the improving Sadio Mane as the first goalscorer.

Pick: Liverpool to win (+138) / Mane first goalscorer (+700)
