MLS Predictions

There are many ways to bet on soccer from the odds above. Whether you want to bet on totals, favorites, underdogs, or even create a same-game parlay.

The Sounders are the heaviest favorite on the card this weekend. The form guide will show NYCFC (13 points), Cincinnati (12), and Real Salt Lake (10) as the hottest teams over the last five rounds. Toronto and Chicago have both collected just a single point in the last five rounds. The two will meet on Saturday night in MLS Week 14.

Toronto FC vs Chicago Fire Prediction

It’s a battle for the basement of the Eastern Conference when Toronto hosts Chicago at BMO Field in Ontario at 7:00 pm EST Saturday during MLS Week 14.

Both teams are off to terrible starts this year with Toronto 13th in the conference with 12 points, and Chicago 14th with 11. This will definitely be seen as a game that both teams expect to take points from as they look to kickstart their campaigns. Toronto did win on Wednesday in the Canadian Championship, 2-1 in Halifax against the Wanderers.

The last 11 meetings between these teams have seen over 2.5 goals scored. In 10 of those 11 both teams have scored and there have been over 2.5 goals scored.

Now sure, teams change from year to year and those 11 meetings date back to 2016. Much of the rosters have turned over. But, much remains the same. Chicago is dreadful on the road. After losing last week in New York, they have just three wins in 35 road games. In their past 30 road games, they’ve kept just two clean sheets.

As bad as Toronto has been,  going winless in six, they should have the ability to score on their home pitch. They’ve done in all but one game at BMO thus far. They have though, failed to keep a single clean sheet on the year. Dating back into last season, they’ve actually failed to keep a clean sheet in 21 straight matchrs. They have though, been undefeated against Chicago in their last 13 meetings.

Toronto is 9-4 to Over 2.5 totals, while Chicago is 7-6 to the Under. However, many of those Fire Unders came in the early portion of the season. They are 5-1 to Over 2.5 totals in their past six.

Someone has to win. Or maybe not. The way these two are playing they could draw. But there is talent on the field. The likes of Jesus Jimenez, Alejandro Pozuelo, and Ayo Akinola for TFC, and Xherdan Shaqiri, Kacper Pryzbylko, and Chris Mueller for the Fire — are all more than capable of finding the back of the net.

You can never, ever, trust the Fire on the road. You can’t trust TFC’s defense anywhere right now. Toronto ranks dead-last in xGA at 29.2. The next closest is San Jose at 24.1. Toronto also ranks 28th (last) in opponent’s shots on target.

Forget betting a winner and just back goals.

Pick: Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 (-104); 1 unit

Seattle Sounders vs Charlotte FC Best Bet

One of two Sunday matches, see Seattle hosting Charlotte at 9:30 pm EST. Few would have predicted that the expansion side Charlotte would be entering MLS Week 14 with more points than the perennial MLS Cup contenders Seattle Sounders who are currently just +1600 in the MLS Cup odds. But at 5-1-7 and 16 points, seventh in the East, that is the reality. Seattle is 4-1-6 with 13 points and 12th in the West.

It’s an upside-down world, but one that can be easily explained. Seattle always starts slow. They also put all of their resources into becoming the first MLS team to win the CONCACAF Champions League. A goal, they accomplished. With that task complete, they can now shift their focus back to MLS.

Their form has been hit or miss since the CCL Final. They expectedly lost in Dallas just days later. They then lost in penalties in the US Open Cup Round of 32 to San Jose. Then a 3-1 home win over Minnesota, 1-0 road win over Houston, and last Sunday’s 1-0 road loss in Colorado.

That US Open Cup loss will give them the edge in time off heading into this weekend. Charlotte advanced to the round of 16 and played away to the Red Bulls on Wednesday where they lost 3-1.

Charlotte has won two of their past three in MLS, with all of those games coming at home. But away from home, they’ve gained just one point in six games. They’re 0-1-5. Outside of a 0-0 draw, in all five losses, they have allowed multiple goals.

The Sounders surely aren’t happy where they stand in the table. And at home is a spot they should be able to collect points against an expansion team. Across all competitions, in nine home matches, Seattle has scored multiple goals in seven, as well as in six of their past seven.

This looks like a Seattle win. But we’re not looking at the best return for a straight win. Alternatively, you could bet the Sounders to score over 1.5 goals on their team total, or a Sounders win and for them to score over 1.5 goals as well, essentially creating a same-game parlay.

Pick: Seattle to Win & Over 1.5 Goals (-105); 1 unit at WilliamHill

MLS Week 14 Parlay Picks

Here’s a two-game parlay from Saturday’s slate of matches.

LAFC vs San Jose Earthquakes Pick

Supporters’ Shield leading LAFC take on the San Jose Earthquakes in MLS Week 14 Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm EST.

Both are coming off midweek games in the US Open Cup Round of 16. San Jose lost to USL side Sacramento Repubic 2-0. LAFC also lost, away to rivals the LA Galaxy. On top of the loss, LAFC saw both Carlos Vela and Diego Palacios leave the match injured.

These teams have played in 11 all-time meetings, ten in MLS and once in the US Open Cup. Only twice has there been fewer than three goals scored. Once came last year in a 2-0 Earthquakes win. The other results last year were 2-1 San Jose and 3-1 LAFC.

Prior to last season the scorelines have read: 3-2, 2-1, 5-1, 4-0, 3-1, 5-0, 2-0 and 4-3. That’s an average of 4.09 GPG when these teams meet up.

LAFC is rolling right now atop the West and overall standings. And while San Jose is way down in the table, they are improving at 3-3-1 in their past seven.

These are both Over teams. LAFC is 8-5 to the Over and San Jose is 9-4.  For San Jose 11/13 games this season have seen at least two goals scored. For LAFC, that ratio is 13/13.

I wouldn’t put anyone off a high-scoring affair with goals from both sides. But LAFC has kept four clean sheets this season.

LAFC ranks first in xG in the West at 23.7, while San Jose ranks last in the West in xGA at 24.1.

Despite the LAFC injuries, there should still be a couple of goals here, so I’m including Over 1.5 goals into this parlay.

CF Montreal vs FC Cincinnati Pick

Montreal is the highest-ranked “Over” team in the league at 10-3. Cincinnati isn’t far behind at 8-5. Meanwhile, both find themselves currently in playoff positions in the East. Montreal is fourth with 20 points, and Cincy, is sixth with 19.

It’s the most success Cincinnati has had in their short MLS existence. Prior to last week’s 3-2 loss versus New England, they had won four straight, something they had never done before. Maybe even more impressive is the fact that 13 of those 19 points have come on the road. Only the New York Red Bulls have collected more road points than FCC. They’ll be fresh heading into the weekend having already been eliminated from the US Open Cup.

Montreal is also one of the early-season success stories in MLS. However, a run of eight games undefeated preceded their lastest back-to-back 2-1 defeats. They did win 3-0 over Forge in the Canadian Championship on Wednesday.

Montreal has scored in every MLS game this season except their season opener. But they’ve also conceded in all but one as well. Their lone clean sheet came against Charlotte.

Cincinnati ranks 21st in xGA in MLS, while only three teams (Toronto, SKC and San Jose) have allowed more goals than Montreal. This will be the second game between the sides this season, with Montreal having won 4-3 earlier in Cincinnati.

I can see goals from both sides (-162) here in MLS Week 14 for the second half of the parlay.

Parlay Picks: LAFC vs San Jose Over 1.5 Goals & Montreal vs Cincinnati Both to Score (-120); 1 unit
