  • Heading into the third round, Bayern Munich lead the way as +110 favorites to win this season’s DFB-Pokal
  • Bayern have struggled this season, narrowly escaping with a 2-1 win over VfL Bochum in the second round
  • A challenger to Bayern’s bid to repeat as DFB-Pokal champions may emerge out of the third-round clash between Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig

Bayern Munich needed a pair of late goals to escape with a narrow 2-1 victory over VfL Bochum in the second round of this season’s DFB-Pokal.

However, the club’s uninspired performance over the 2. Bundesliga bottom-feeders has failed to knock them from their perch atop the odds to repeat as DFB-Pokal champs, where they continue to lead the way as +110 favorites in soccer futures betting.

Bayern Plagued by Slow Start

A slow start has threatened to end Bayern’s reign, both as seven-time defending Bundesliga champions and as DFB-Pokal champions. The FCB have struggled to produce steady results in league play, posting just one win in their past four matches to remain stalled in fourth place on the Bundesliga table. The club are also coming off their worst defeat in league play in 10 years, a 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt that extends their shaky road record to 3-5-1 in nine league outings since March, and cost manager Niko Kovac his job.

With Bayern struggling, opportunity knocks for a host of rival clubs to claim this season’s DFB-Pokal title. Borussia Dortmund sits second to the Bavarians on the DFB-Pokal futures at +450, ahead of Bayer Leverkusen at +600, and RB Leipzig at +750.

BVB on the Rebound

After an uneven start to their campaign, the BVB have rebounded with wins in three straight matches across all competitions, including an impressive 2-1 comeback victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach on October 30 that bounced the current Bundesliga leaders from DFB-Pokal contention.

And unlike Bayern, who will face a rejuvenated Hoffenheim squad when DFB-Pokal action resumes in early February, Dortmund can look forward to a clash with Werder Bremen, who have struggled early on this season, posting just two wins in 10 league matches.

It has been a disappointing campaign so far for Bayer Leverkusen. Bayer have managed to post consecutive wins just once in 13 matches across all competitions since late August, and have also struggled badly in UEFA Champions League action.

Conversely, it has been a disappointing campaign so far for Bayer Leverkusen. Bayer have managed to post consecutive wins just once in 13 matches across all competitions since late August, and have also struggled badly in UEFA Champions League action, falling to defeat in three of four group stage matches, all but guaranteeing yet another speedy exit from that tournament.

All Eyes on Clash between Frankfurt, Leipzig

Perhaps the most intriguing matchup to watch in DFB-Pokal third-round action will be between Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig on February 4. Pegged at a lengthy +2500 on the DFB-Pokal futures, Frankfurt has enjoyed recent success at this tournament, reaching the final in two of the past three years including a title win in 2018.

Die Adler have also emerged as contenders in Bundesliga action this season, with their rout of Bayern lifting them to 5-2-3 on the season and just two points back of second-place Dortmund.

DFB-Pokal finalists last season, Leipzig have filled the net of late, outscoring opponents by a wide 14-3 margin during a three-match win streak across all competitions, including a 6-1 demolition of WfL Wolfsburg in their last tournament contest.

Can Frankfurt, Leipzig Compete with Bayern?

Both these clubs have also enjoyed modest success against Bayern. In addition to their recent lopsided win in league play, Frankfurt knocked off the BVB by a 3-1 score to claim the 2018 DFB-Pokal title. And while Leipzig has been heartbroken by defeats in their past two tournament meetings with Bayern, they have compiled a respectable 1-2-2 record in five dates with the BVB.

Of course, just one of these clubs will survive past the third round. Evenly matched, Frankfurt and Leipzig have each earned one win and played to a draw on two occasions over their past four meetings. But with Frankfurt owning home field in an upcoming Bundesliga clash with Leipzig on January 25, and their DFB-Pokal matchup in early February, the value in their current lengthy +2500 odds to claim a second DFB-Pokal title in three years is just simply too hard to ignore.

Pick: Eintracht Frankfurt to win DFB-Pokal (+2500)
