After just a month and half break from the Champions League final in Portugal, it is already time to start thinking about the favorites for next year’s competition. In this past year’s edition, we saw a Champions League season that was truly wide open for the taking. The final four consisted of Man City, Chelsea, PSG and Real Madrid and it was fair to say at the time that all of those teams deserved to be there and had a chance at winning. Nonetheless, the Blues from London took home their second Champions League trophy against Pep Guardiola’s Man City side.

After a tumultuous first half of the season under Frank Lampard, some people might have questioned Chelsea’s chances in a Champions League Final. However, under Thomas Tuchel they radiated calmness and control. Additionally, rumors are circling that Erling Haaland could end up at Stamford Bridge this summer which is one of the reasons they are among the favorites to repeat as champions. Regardless, the Champions League is a brutally tough competition to repeat in. In fact, the last team to do so before Zidane’s Real Madrid three-peat was AC Milan all the way back in the ’80s.

Furthermore, this year’s Champions League will be equally as competitive and wide open. The five most favored sides to win have all been to a final in the past three years and have consistently improved. This goes without even mentioning the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Man United who always have a chance at advancing far in European competition.

Man City are Looking to Add Even More Talent

It is safe to say that Man City and Pep Guardiola seem to be cursed from winning the Champions League. Every year it seems more and more likely that it will be their year. However, they sadly seem to fall short every time. It seems as though patience is running thin at the Etihad Stadium which has Sheikh Mansour and Guardiola going on a spending spree like no other. After losing Sergio Aguero to Barcelona on a free transfer, Man City are courting the likes of Harry Kane, Jack Grealish and Antoine Griezmann.

The chances they can bring over all or even two of these players seem slim to none, but if any team can do it, it is Man City. Again, even adding one of these players to an already loaded lineup would bolster City’s creativity and goal-scoring ability to a whole other level. Ultimately, it would also strengthen their Champions League odds.

PSG’s Summer Activity is Being Slept on

In my opinion, one team’s summer transfer window that is going completely under the radar is PSG. Paris already have a lineup that oozes class and quality. It is only the beginning of July and they have already added Gini Wijnaldum, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and Achraf Hakimi. Donnarumma completely changes the goalkeeping landscape at PSG, and Gini Wijnaldum if used correctly could be a great goalscoring, box-to-box midfielder. PSG realize Mbappe is leaving next year for Real Madrid or Liverpool and are putting all their eggs into this year’s basket.

Elsewhere, Bayern and Liverpool are also valuable picks as they return to the Champions League healthy and with a few new defenders. Bayern have added Dayot Upamecano, while Liverpool have added his RB Leipzig teammate Ibrahima Konate in defense and look to add another midfielder as well. For Chelsea, it will be difficult to repeat, and Barcelona and Real Madrid still do not have enough depth to compete at this level.

2021/22 Champions League Winner Best Bet

Overall, the best bet to win the 2021/22 Champions League is PSG with odds of +800. So far, they have improved the most this summer and still have Neymar and Mbappe running the front of their offense. Their only major departure was Moise Keane, who went back to Everton, and the odds for them to win have great value.

Pick: PSG (+800)
