Palmeiras of Brazil meet Mexico’s Tigres UANL when the FIFA Club World Cup reaches its semifinal stage in Qatar on Sunday.

Winners of South America’s 2020 Copa Libertadores competition last weekend, Palmeiras are entering the global tournament at the last four stage.

Tigres qualified as winners of the CONCACAF Champions League and have already advanced through one round in Qatar – winning 2-1 against Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea at the second stage.

The event was postponed from 2020 because of the Coronavirus epidemic.

Now it is being played between six teams, including five of FIFA’s regional champions and one team from the host nation, with Bayern Munich of Germany the favorites to lift the prize.

At DraftKings, the analysts make Palmeiras the favorites to win the semifinal at +110. The odds for a Tigres victory are +250 with a draw after 90 minutes at +240.

Sunday’s game kicks off at 1pm ET at the 45,000-capacity Education City Stadium in Qatar which has been constructed ahead of the World Cup in the nation next year.

In the other semifinal, European Champions League winners Bayern Munich enter to meet Al Ahly of Egypt who are African Champions League holders.

Most Successful Club In Brazil

Last four favorites Palmeiras from Sao Paolo are Brazil’s most successful club in terms of domestic honors and  are seeking  to be the fifth-time Brazilian winners of the Club World Cup.

They qualified for the Club World Cup for the first time after defeating fellow Brazilians Santos 1-0 in the final of the Copa Libertadores.

That victory came in dramatic circumstances in Rio De Janeiro last Saturday, thanks to a headed goal from wide man Breno Lopes in the ninth minute of added time at the end.

Underdogs Tigres of Liga MX scored a 2-1 win against LA FC in the final of the CONCACAF Champions League, which covers Central and North America.

Based in Monterrey, they  are hoping that the goal-scoring exploits of their veteran and much-loved French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac can help them pull off an upset in Qatar.

He scored both goals in the defeat of Ulsan Hyundai.

Gignac scored one of the goals in last December’s Champions League final win and seems determined to end his career in glorious style – which makes Tigres an attractive outside bet here at +250.

After the Mexican side had fallen behind in the 24th minute, Gignac equalised with a close-range 38th minute tap-in. He then claimed the winner with a 45th-minute penalty.

His double strike took his tally to 146 goals for Tigres across all competitions.

Between 2016 and 2019, Tigres had reached the CONCACAF Champions League final on three occasions but failed each time.  But after triumphing at last against LAFC, they are at the Club World Cup for the first time.

Domestically, the team is currently placed eighth in the Clausura section of Mexico’s double-headed Liga MX competition after two wins, one draw and one defeat.

Palmeiras are currently placed sixth in Brazil’s Serie A league competition.

Their record stands at 14 wins in this Serie A campaign with 11 draws and eight defeats – with the most recent result a 1-1 draw at home against Botafogo.

However, they have failed to win in any of their last four Serie A matches with two draws and two defeats.

*Statistics from last five matches in all competitions

Just like Tigres, Palmeiras are reliant on a veteran striker.

Luiz Adriano, 33,  had a successful career in Europe with Shakhtar Donetsk and is now the leading scorer for Palmeiras in the current campaign with 20 goals across all competitions.

South America holds the Club World Cup in much higher regard than Europe ,where it is seen as semi-friendly, midseason distraction from the real action of the major national leagues.

Danger Against Underdogs

For Palmeiras, a triumph in the competition will boost their standing in their great rivalries with Corinthians of Sao Paolo, who were Club World Cup winners in 2012.

Yet the semifinal is always seen as a dangerous stage for South American teams.

A berth in the  final – usually against a glamorous European side lies in wait  – but first there is the tricky business of overcoming an underdog side from a less powerful league such as Mexico’s Liga MX.

Until now, there has been no previous meeting between Tigres and Palmeiras.

Qatar will stage the final of the Club World Cup at 1pm ET on Thursday, February 11.

Pick: Tigres UANL (+250)
