Newcastle United vs Everton Prediction

The Magpies have languished in the bottom three all season but have recently shown signs of life. Last time out, before the winter break, they won 1-0 away at Leeds and during January they spent big, bringing four top-level, experienced players to the club. Bruno Guimaraes and Matt Targett are expected to make their Toon debuts against Everton, while Brazillian striker Joelinton is expected to recover from a knock and be fit to start.

Everton, who prior to the break were in freefall, will be hoping for some ‘new manager bounce’ to help their fight against relegation. Three EPL defeats on the bounce were enough for the Everton board to call time on Rafa Benitez’s tenure and replace him with Frank Lampard and it started well for the former England international at the weekend, with the Toffees team beating Brentford 4-1 in the FA Cup.

The Toon will be hoping to build on the Leeds win but expectations are now so high at James’ Park it is almost impossible for Eddie Howe’s men to live with the hype. I see Everton’s new manager bounce being the decisive factor and them making it two wins on the spin.

Picks: Everton to win  (+175)

Aston Villa vs Leeds United Prediction

Villa have excelled since the arrival of Steven Gerrard in the manager’s hot seat and prior to the break, they were the team to signal the end of Rafa Benitez’s Everton career when Emi Buendia’s header gave them a fine 1-0 away win at Goodison. Gerrard has steered the Villans to the safety of mid-table although they had stumbled prior to the win on Merseyside after going three without a win.

Leeds will have been badly bruised by the Newcastle defeat and are without question well and truly part of the relegation scrap. They have also been hit very hard by illness and injuries with Junior Firpo, Liam Cooper, Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips, Crysencio Summerville and Sam Greenwood all either injured or doubtful for the Villa game.

Leeds will still, however, go to Villa Park to play in their normal open and expansive style – coach Marcelo Bielsa knows no other way  – but this may work in Villa’s favor. I expect a comfortable home win here and so there is even value in the -132 for the home win.

Pick: Aston Villa to win  (-132)

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Arsenal Prediction

Wolves were disappointed to lose 1-0 at home to Norwich in the FA Cup on Saturday but in terms of the EPL, they are in a good place. After a difficult start to the campaign, new coach Bruno Lage has led his talented group of players to the cusp of the European places, and they come into this of the back of a three-game winning run in the league.

Arsenal, also after a tricky start, are up to sixth and are in the race for the Champions League places. They have, however, lost the services of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – who joined Barcelona in the January transfer window – and went the whole of January without winning a game. The Gunners need to rediscover their mojo soon but a win here for Wolves will see them leapfrog Arsenal in the table.

The defeat by Norwich will have stung and Wolves will be desperate to get back to winning ways. Arsenal’s poor January will have drained the confidence a little, so with the Old Gold in plus money at +260, that, for me, is where the value lies.

Pick: Wolves to win (+260)
