There will be Group B supremacy at stake on Thursday, October 21st when PSV Eindhoven hosts AS Monaco at PSV Stadion in the Netherlands. The two teams are unbeaten so far in the Europa League, having won one and drawn one each through the first two games of this season’s competition.

Both teams have posted almost identical results thus far in the Europa League. Both have earned draws against Real Sociedad as well as wins against Sturm Graz, although PSV’s 4-1 result was far more resounding than Monaco’s 1-0 edge.

PSV Heating Up

Despite Eredivisie losses to Feyenoord and Willem II last month, PSV has come on strong of late, winning its last three games. Underpinning much of the team’s success this season has been its attack, which has scored 22 goals in just nine league games, in addition to the six it has scored in two Europa League contests. Even better, that attack has come from everywhere. They have 12 different players finding the net domestically, while all six of its Europa League strikes have come from different sources.

However, things aren’t as rosy on the defensive end, with PSV conceding 12 goals in the first nine games of the Dutch league season, and managing to keep just one clean sheet, either at home or abroad.

Monaco Adrift

After finishing third last season, just four points back of second-place Paris Saint-Germain, the principality club is currently sitting in 10th place in Ligue 1, 13 points behind first-place PSG, after last weekend’s 2-0 loss at Lyon.

The team has lost four games already just 10 games into the season, and while it remains unbeaten in the Europa League, it has hardly blown away the opposition, scoring just twice in two games.

Unfamiliar Foes

Though Thursday’s match will be the fifth meeting between PSV and Monaco, it will be the first in over 16 years, with the two meeting in consecutive Champions League campaigns.

While Monaco won one and drew one in the group stages of the 2003-04 season – on its way to an appearance in the final – PSV returned the favor the following season. They won home and away in the round-of-16 on their way to the semifinals.

PSV Powerful At Home

Eindhoven has a winning record at home to French teams, winning six, drawing six and losing just three in 15 games. But based on past form Monaco will likely feel more confident, winning three of its five games in the Netherlands.

However, PSV has turned its home stadium into something of a fortress of late in continental action, remaining unbeaten in its past seven UEFA games there. And Monaco has found European wins to be something of a rarity away from Monte Carlo. They have failed to win any of their previous eight group stage fixtures in the Champions League. Drawing two and losing one in its last time competing in the Europa League group stage, back in 2015.

Sangare Suspended

After being sent off after scoring the opener in PSV’s 4-1 win over Real Sociedad, midfielder Ibrahim Sangare will be suspended for this match. Oon-loan midfielder Davy Propper could take his place. Upfront, however, Yorbe Vertessen could feature here, with the 20-year-old having scored one and made one in his previous three appearances.

Monaco will be boosted by the return of midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Sofiane Diop. They have scored a combined six goals this season but were suspended for the club’s Ligue 1 game on the weekend.
