Andalusian rivals Real Betis and Sevilla will lock horns in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 on Saturday, with a spot in the quarterfinals of Spain’s premier cup competition on the line.
Both clubs are enjoying a fine run of form this term, with Sevilla sitting in second spot in the La Liga table, while Betis is in third. However, there is a hefty 10-point gap between the Seville counterparts.
Los Rojiblancos have utterly dominated Betis in recent memory, running out as winners in five of the last six meetings in this intense Seville Derby.

History Not on Real Betis’s Side
Manuel Pelligrini’s men are putting together a respectable campaign, but Sevilla has been an extremely tough opponent for them over the years, both in La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
The last victory against their rivals came in 2018 and in knockout football, Betis is winless in three games. The last meeting in the 2015/16 quarterfinals of this competition saw Sevilla run riot on Betis, beating them 6-0 across two legs.

However, Pelligrini’s group will be motivated to turn around their fortunes on Saturday after stringing together some respectable results. They took down Valladolid 3-0 in the Round of 32 on January 5th, then followed that up with a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano last weekend, despite going down to 10 men after Alex Moreno was sent off in the 33rd minute.

Pelligrini will have no shortage of absences for this fixture, though. Center-back Bartra is battling injury, while right-back Martin Montoya is recovering from foot surgery. Frontman Willian Jose is out, but leading goal-getter Juanmi returns to action and should feature here.
Sevilla Firing on All Cylinders
Sevilla is flying high this term with an impressive 13-5-2 record. They’re also currently riding a seven-game unbeaten streak, dropping just two points during that span. In the process, Julen Lopetegui’s side has bagged nine goals and conceded just three.

In the last round of the Copa del Rey, Los Nervionenses comfortably beat Real Zaragoza 2-0 thanks to goals from Jules Kounde and striker Rafa Mir. Sevilla also followed that victory up with a key three points in La Liga on Sunday, defeating Getafe by a goal thanks to an early first-half opener from Mir once again, who has netted eight times across all competitions and twice in the Copa del Rey.
Lopetegui will certainly have concerns about his squad for Saturday, however. There’s a host of players unavailable, as forwards Munnir El Haddadi and Youssef En-Nesyri are at the Africa Cup of Nations, along with keeper Yassine Bounou.

Thomas Delaney, Suso, and Erik Lamela are all sidelined with injuries as well. It’s unknown if Kounde, their most reliable defender, will be available to play here after limping off with an injury vs Getafe. With attacking options thin, Mir is set to lead the line.

Real Betis vs Sevilla Prediction
Based on history, all signs point to Sevilla coming out victorious in this match. Even though they’re missing some key players in the final third, the visitors’ backline remains strong and should be able to hold it down here, while Mir’s recent form should come into play for Lopetegui’s squad. Betis will make it close but they’ll fall just short. Also, four of the last five meetings hit the under in goals. It’s a worthy bet.
