Domestically they are still keeping their noses in front – eight points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga with just one defeat – but two defeats in their last two UCL games have left the door open for Sevilla to pinch the second qualifying spot.

Back-to-back defeats at the hands of Wolfsburg and Lille in November are now starting to look very costly for Matthias Jaissle’s men, who have to lift themselves for one final push to get over the line. To miss out would be a crushing blow for the Austrians who have looked to be on the cusp of qualifying since beating Wolfsburg on Matchday 3 to go 2-1-0. Their fate, however, remains in their own hands.

Winner Takes All

As things stand, the one-point lead Salzburg has over Sevilla could prove crucial as a draw will be enough to see them through, even if Wolfsburg were to beat Lille in the other game. Despite that possibility of bringing the two teams level on points, the Austrians have a better goal difference than the Germans and so would still qualify for the knockout phase.

But, for the Austrians, it has been tough going of late, even domestically, and they have won just twice in their last seven games in all competitions. The apparent invincibility they showed in September and October looks to be gone, although they did pick up an important win at the weekend when beat TSV Hartberg 2-1. Also in their favor is that in the UCL, both of their wins have come when playing at home.

No Win for Sevilla Until Matchday 5

This campaign has been a struggle for Sevilla – they did not register a win until Matchday 5 – but Group G is so tight, with no one running away with the top spot, the Spaniards are still alive and kicking. So much so, a win here would guarantee them a place in the knockout phase.

After opening with three successive draws and then losing at home to Lille on Matchday 4, things looked bleak for Sevilla but a 2-0 home win over Wolfsburg last time out has thrown them an unlikely lifeline. As with Salzburg, their destiny remains in their own hands.

No Away Defeats for Sevilla in UCL

A win in Austria would do the job for Sevilla and give them another crack at the knockout phase of the UCL, which would also match their achievement of last season when they made it to the round-of-16 only to be knocked out by Borussia Dortmund. While they have struggled all season for consistency, they at least come into this game in decent shape after back-to-back 1-0 wins over Cordoba and Villarreal in the Copa del Rey and La Liga respectively.

While the Spaniards have won just four of their 11 away matches this season, they have not lost away in the UCL in their last nine outings – a run that dates back to October 2017. When these two teams met in Sevilla back in September, it was 1-1 with Ivan Rakitic and Luka Sucic both scoring from the penalty spot.

Salzburg vs Sevilla Prediction

A pressurized occasion like this will demand calm heads and clear thinking, something that puts an experienced Sevilla side in pole position. While the Spaniards are having to deal with injuries, especially in attack with the loss of Erik Lamela and Suso, they have the momentum, and that could prove crucial. For me, for as long as the visitors remain in plus money, the away win here is the value bet.

Picks: Sevilla to win (+135) / Sevilla to win 2-1 (+900)
