Scotland and the Czech Republic will lock horns on Monday in Glasgow in a vital Euro 2020 Group D fixture. These two sides are going to have a daunting task at progressing to the knockout stages due to their company in England and Croatia, which makes this clash even more important as both teams look to get started on the right foot.

Scotland Finally Back on The Big Stage

It’s been precisely 23 years since Scotland appeared in a major tournament, suffering defeat to Morocco, which officially ended their World Cup dreams in France. Despite being handed a tough pod in qualifying for the Euros alongside Belgium and Russia, they ultimately did well enough in the Nations League to earn spot in the Euro 2020 Playoffs.

That’s where they first defeated Israel and Serbia on penalties to officially book their ticket to this prestigious competition.

Steve Clarke’s men head into the European Championships in impressive form, losing just twice in their last 16 appearances while even playing to a 2-2 draw with a quality Dutch side last week in a tune-up fixture. Scotland will also have the Tartan Army in full force at Hampden Park in Glasgow for two of their three group matches, which is a massive plus for the side.

There is no shortage of quality in Clarke’s squad, either. Captain Andy Robertson from Liverpool is rock solid at left-back, while fellow Premier League standouts Liam Cooper and Kieran Tierney are two players who are important to the Scottish backline.

In the final third, Che Adams will be relied upon to provide some brilliance. The Southampton frontman bagged nine goals and tallied five assists for the Saints last term while scoring twice in four games thus far. Also keep an eye on Villa’s John McGinn, who bagged seven in qualifying for the Euros.

Czechs Eyeing a Spot in Knockout Stages

The Czech Republic are no stranger to being on the big stage, having appeared in six consecutive European Championships prior to this summer. While there have been some impressive showings throughout those years with appearances in the semifinals and even the ’96 finals where they lost to Germany, 2016 saw the Czechs bow out in the group stage without a victory.

Lokomotiva had a promising qualifying campaign, however, finishing as runners-up to the Three Lions in Group A with a 5-0-3 record. They come into their first match in respectable form, losing just twice in their previous seven appearances. While they were throttled 4-0 by Italy in a friendly last week, Jaroslav Silhavy’s side responded with a convincing 3-1 victory over the Albanians.

While the team has been slightly inconsistent dating back to last fall, the Czech Republic did prove their worth by securing a 1-1 draw with a world-class Belgium squad in World Cup Qualifiers in March.

Although Scotland certainly has their number as of late, the Czechs will see this fixture as one of the most winnable of the lot with England and Croatia ahead. However, it will not be easy by any means to win on Scottish soil.

The Czech Republic has several attacking threats just like their opposition as well. West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek is more than capable of providing firepower in the final third while Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick, who has scored 11 times at the international level, is always clinical, too.
