In the eighth and final round of 16 match at the Euro 2020 tournament, Sweden vs Ukraine kicks off at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland. Sweden finished first place in Group E as they went undefeated against the likes of Spain, Slovakia and Poland.

Due to their solid run of form, gaffer Janne Andersson is probably expecting a positive result against the Ukrainians. With that being said, nothing is given in this tournament. This was on full display in the first major upset of the tournament on Sunday, seeing the Netherlands fall to the Czech Republic in Budapest.

For Ukraine, many fans would agree that they are quite lucky to even be this far into the tournament. In the group stage, they were tasked with facing the Netherlands, Austria and North Macedonia. The Macedonians went winless in the group, and were the only victory for Ukraine.

Since only the top four third-place sides in the tournament advance, Ukraine reached the knockout stages based on goal difference, beating out Finland and Slovakia also on three points.

Regardless, Ukraine are a team that cannot be overlooked. The side managed by Andriy Shevchenko battled back against a two-goal deficit versus the Netherlands, and hung in a another close match with Austria. Andriy Yarmolenko is always an option in front of the goal and should stand as a worthy threat to a frugal Swedish defense. Furthermore, the winner of this match will go on to play either England or Germany in the quarterfinals of Euro 2020.

Emil Forsberg is the Leader to Carry Sweden

It has been prevalent in this tournament that Sweden do not depend on the performance of one person. They are one of the few sides in the competition that has class all around the pitch. From youngster Alexander Isak up top to Victor Lindelof in the back line, Sweden has multiple players they can depend on.

However, one person that has led by example more than anyone in these first three games in Emil Forsberg. The RB Leipzig midfielder has three goals in the tournament and has a legitimate argument to compete for the Golden Boot.

Sweden vs Ukraine Euro 2020 Statistics

1.33 Goals per game 1.33
9.3 Shots per game 9.7

69.9% Passing % 83.5%

But, Forsberg does much more than just put the ball in the back of the net. He is a player with experience at major tournaments, and someone that can hold his younger teammates accountable. His playmaking ability is second to none, and is a large reason why he has been connected so heavily to Bayern Munich. If Forsberg puts in another Man of the Match performance, it is hard to see Sweden faltering.

Can Ukraine Duplicate Euro 2012 Result?

The last time these sides met competitively was back in Euro 2012 in Kyiv. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was still bagging goals for Sweden, and for Ukraine, Shevchenko was leading the team on the field instead of the bench. Yarmolenko was also involved in the match, a game that Ukraine won by a score of 2-1. Sweden have arguably improved since eight years ago which will make replicating this night in Scotland all the more difficult.

If the Ukraine do want to meet England or Germany in the next round, they will have to put heavy pressure on the Swedish defense. Robert Lewandowski managed to break them down twice in the last group stage match, proving the task is not impossible. Yarmolenko will have to make an impact but also look for some attacking chances for Roman Yaremchuk as he has also played well during Euro 2020.

Sweden vs Ukraine Best Bet

Overall, the best bet for this match is Sweden with moneyline odds of +135. Sweden’s bad performance at this tournament was ultimately drawing to Spain. Andersson’s side has been so far improved to past years and to get positive moneyline odds in their favor against a team that narrowly scraped by makes this a great value pick.

Pick: Sweden moneyline (+135)
