USA vs Jamaica Preview
Despite things going well on the pitch for the USA, it’s been a tricky spell for them off it. Coach Gregg Berhalter was temporarily relieved of his duties while the US federation investigated complaints against him but despite him being cleared of any wrongdoing, he won’t be in charge for this tournament. Berhalter will resume his role when this competition ends.
Instead, the squad will be managed by BJ Callaghan whose recent temporary spell in charge saw them win the Nations League, thanks to a semifinal win over Mexico and a final victory over Canada. As a result, the USA has now won three CONCACAF titles on the bounce for the first time ever.

Youthful USA Squad for Gold Cup
While the US took their strongest squad available to the Nations League, they will be using this tournament as an opportunity to blood some young players and give them an invaluable taste of tournament soccer – some for the first time. Only two players in their squad – Sean Johnson and Aaron Long – are 30 or over.
But, nevertheless, their record in this tournament is excellent and in the group stages, they have not experienced defeat since 2011. They also have a very good recent record against the Reggae Boyz and are unbeaten in their last five contests.
Five Gold Cups on the Spin for Reggae Boyz
This is the Reggae Boyz’ fifth successive appearance in the Gold Cup, but with an aging squad, it could be the last chance for several members of their squad to make their mark on the continental stage. In fairness, their record in this tournament over the last decade has been pretty good, with final appearances in 2015 and 2017.
Under the management of Heimir Hallgrimsson, who led his native Iceland to their first World Cup in 2018, they have endured a tough spell since his arrival (in September 2022) and, despite some good performances, are yet to win a match.
Their inability to get the job done was summed up in last week’s friendly with Jordan, which they led 1-0 before eventually losing 2-1.

Jamaica’s Poor Recent Record Against the USA
For the Jamaicans to succeed here, they have to overcome that poor recent record against the USA, who they haven’t beaten since 2019 – that victory coming in Washington DC where they won 1-0 in a friendly. Four of the last five meetings have ended in a USA win.
When these two last met in the Gold Cup, in the quarterfinal of the 2021 tournament, it ended in a 1-0 win for the USA – a competition the USMNT ended up winning after victory over Qatar in the semifinal and then Mexico in the final.

USA vs Jamaica Prediction
It’s hard to make a case for anything other than a USA win given their recent respective records, but it’s worth bearing in mind this USMNT is very different from the one that recently won the Nations League. They do, however, have home advantage and that should be enough to get them over the line in what I expect to be a low-scoring game.
