It’s the USA vs Panama on Matchday 13 of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying on Sunday, March 27 at 7:00 pm EST at Orlando’s Exploria Stadium.

The USA is second in the eight-team qualifying group, with the top three qualifying automatically for Qatar 2022. The fourth-placed team goes into a playoff with the winner of the Oceanian qualifying section.

Panama is currently fifth and is in what looks to be a two-way battle with  Costa Rica for that fourth spot, but with two games left there is still time for a late twist.

We preview USA vs Panama and offer below the best picks for this huge World Cup qualifier.

USA on Cusp of World Cup Qualification

A win here for Gregg Berhalter’s team and they will all but book their place in Qatar. In fact, if they win and other results go their way – specifically Costa Rica failing to beat Honduras – then they will be certain of a place in December’s tournament.

On Thursday night, the US actually missed an opportunity to clinch their place although, in reality, a goalless draw in Mexico City against one of the group’s fancied teams was a positive step. As it transpired, they had some good chances to win the game but were forced to play predominantly on the break with Mexicans having 63 percent of the possession.

Miserly USA Defense

Against Panama, USA will expect to see more of the ball, with the visitors tending to adopt a style of getting men behind the ball and play – as the US was forced to in Mexico – in a way that relies on swift counter-attacks to create goalscoring opportunities. Very much in the USA’s favor here is their outstanding home record, where they are unbeaten in their last 20.

The US team also has a miserly defense, which has conceded just seven goals in this qualifying group, and which in its last five games across all competitions has kept four clean sheets.

Panama Still With Work to Do

For the Panamanians, there is still plenty of work to do before they can start planning for Qatar with recent results seeing them drop out of the top four – a position they held for most of this qualifying group. But their chances suffered a major blow in midweek when they failed to beat bottom-of-the-table Honduras in Panama City.

It was a game they should have won after taking a 23rd-minute lead through Rolando Blackburn. But the Hondurans found a way back into the game on 65 minutes when Kevin López equalized. Panama was unable to force a winner, and with Costa Rica beating table-topping Canada 1-0 at home they slipped to fifth.

A Repeat Win for Panama?

As a result of the midweek results, the fate of the Panamanians is no longer in their own hands. But they can still put huge pressure on the Costa Ricans by winning here in Orlando, especially as the Costa Ricans have a tricky-looking tie themselves in El Salvador.

Panama manager Thomas Christiansen will lean heavily on the fact that back in October his team beat USA 1-0, and will ensure his players believe there are points to be had in Orlando. On that famous night, the Costa Ricans did not allow the US a single shot on goal.

USA vs Panama Picks

USA’s record against Panama is excellent – they have lost to them only twice in their history – but they will have been bruised by that defeat back in October and aware of the dangers posed by their opponents.

With the US massive odds-on favorites, there is no value in betting on the win and I believe that, against the odds, the visitors have a genuine chance here of snatching a priceless point.

Picks: USA and Panama to draw (+335) / Under 0.5 goals (+1050)
