  • Valencia host Lille on Matchday 4
  • Lille bottom of the group with one point from first three matches
  • Valencia two points behind Ajax and Chelsea

Valencia and Lille clash in Champions League Group H on Tuesday, November 5. The two sides are currently in third and fourth in the group respectively and will be looking to make ground on Ajax and Chelsea who meet in west London on Matchday 4.

An injury time equalizer from Jonathan Ikone snatched Lille a point at Stade Pierre Mauroy on Matchday 3. A draw was no more than the hosts deserved after controlling the match, but it still leaves them in a tricky position with three matches to play. Christophe Galtier’s side need a positive result at the Mestella to keep their hopes of progression alive.

Valencia Struggling

Valencia are in a good position to qualify for the last 16, particularly if they can pick up a victory against Lille on Tuesday. The Spanish side haven’t been in the best of form this term, however, with just three wins in 11 La Liga matches. Their expected numbers suggest this isn’t down to misfortune either – their 13.45 expected points domestically is only good for 12th in the league.

Rodrigo and Kevin Gameiro have started the season slowly, combining for four goals in 18 starts across La Liga and the Champions League. Their defense has been suspect too. Only two teams have conceded more non-penalty expected goals in La Liga this term.

Despite a 3-0 defeat to Ajax in their other Champions League match at the Mestalla, Valencia come into this clash having been solid in front of their fans. Albert Celades’ side are unbeaten at home in La Liga so far, though they have drawn four of their six outings.

Frustration in Europe for Lille

Galtier must be wondering how his side have only taken one point from their first three matches. The Ligue 1 outfit suffered from some stellar finishing against Ajax and Chelsea. Their attacking performance against Valencia would usually result in more than one goal.

Despite sitting third in Ligue 1, Lille have been woeful away from home this season, which doesn’t bode well for their trip to Spain on Matchday 4. With two points from their five Ligue 1 matches on the road, it’s not surprising to see Les Dogues out at +320 to defeat Valencia.

Victor Osimhen leads a talented attack – the 20-year-old Nigerian will need to be on his best form if Lille are to upset the odds on Tuesday. After a great start to the season, Osimhen only scored once in October. Galtier will be hoping the young striker can get back to his best form in November.

Sitting on the Fence

Lille are unlikely to have the same dominance on Matchday 4 as they did in France. Their abysmal away record makes it impossible to back them though, particularly with how hard Valencia have been to beat at the Mestalla.

It’s set up to be a relatively even contest. A draw here doesn’t help either side that much, but it looks like the best bet.

Pick: Draw at +250
