  • Each quarter of the 2021 Wimbledon ladies’ singles draw has numerous contenders, but few reliable picks
  • The top quarter, led by No. 1 seed Ashleigh Barty, contains three other Grand Slam champions

The No. 2 and No. 3 players in the world are not in the lineup.

No. 6 seed Serena Williams will likely once again feel the pressure of making history.

And the more recent Grand Slam champions have almost no experience on the Wimbledon lawns.

All of which makes the women’s event a crapshoot in 2021. But what else is new?

Barty a Strong Favorite to Win First Quarter

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty said  she’s ready, after arm and hip injuries derailed her clay-court season.

We’ll see. But the big reason she should win the quarter is because it’s filled with question marks.

Victoria Azarenka suffered lower abdominal pain and had to withdraw  in Bad Homburg, Germany, before her semifinal a few days ago.

French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova, the 2018 Wimbledon doubles champion, will be making her Wimbledon singles debut.

No. 5 seed Bianca Andreescu has played just one Wimbledon main-draw match in her career. And she has Alizé Cornet (who beat her in Berlin two weeks ago) first up.

Look out: unseeded Jelena Ostapenko won Eastbourne on Saturday over No. 24  seed Anett Kontaveit in the final.

Second Quarter Uneven, as Serena Has Challenges

Serena Williams played no grass-court tennis leading up to Wimbledon. As always, she’s a question mark even if grass is her best surface.

Meanwhile, Angelique Kerber just won the inaugural edition of the Bad Homburg Open. They could meet in the third round.

Kerber had seemed indifferent, jaded in 2021. Is this – and the return to the place she won her second major in 2018 (over Serena in the final) a second wind for the 33-year-old?

Every two editions, going back to a semifinal in 2012, Kerber has made a splash at the All-England Club.

On paper, the winner of that could face 17-year-old Coco Gauff in the fourth round. You’d expect the winner of the quarter to come out those three.

Top half of Third Quarter Strong

The balance of power in the third quarter is tilted towards the top half.

You’d expect two-time champion Petra Kvitova to come through.

Kvitova has concerns after twisting an ankle coming out of a television studio at the French Open a few weeks ago.  But she battled her way through to the Bad Homburg semifinals on no grass-court practice, and got the match play she needed – as long as the ankle holds up.

Fourth Quarter is the Toughest

When the top seed in the section has such a thin grass resumé, the quarter is wide open. Especially when it contains a former champion (Garbiñe Muguruza) and a recent grass-court titleist (Ons Jabeur in Birmingham).

No.  4 seed Iga Swiatek could get diced up in the first round by Hsieh Su-Wei – or go all the way.

But it feels like the winner of this quarter will be whomever gets through the potential third-round match between No. 11 seed Muguruza and No. 21 seed Jabeur.

Long Shot: Ons Jabeur (+1000)
