With days to go before the start of the Australian Open, some players are getting some reps at the Yarra Valley Classic. Eighth seed Marketa Vondrousova and sixth seed Garbine Muguruza will go head-to-head in the only semifinal match being played at this tournament.

Serena Williams and Ashleigh Barty were slated to play the other semifinal match, but Barty has skipped through to the finals after Williams withdraws with a shoulder injury. It’ll be interesting to see what Williams’ status for the Aussie Open will be.

Let’s check out the odds and preview the lone semifinal match of this tournament.

Vondrousova’s Road to the Semifinals

Vondrousova entered the tournament looking to improve on her 2020 season. The young player broke out onto the tennis scene at the 2019 French Open, but since then has had a hard time. Through injury as well as COVID, 2020 was a tough year.

She started her tournament with a dominating win against Varvara Gracheva of Russia where she defeated her 6-4, 6-0. She most recently coming off a comeback win against Nadia Podoroska of Argentina, where she went on to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.

Muguruza’s Road to the Semifinals

Muguruza flipped the script from last year’s Australian Open final as she defeated Sofia Kenin 6-2, 6-2 to earn her spot at this semifinal. Muguruza has been playing very strong tennis, having not dropped a set yet in the tournament, and has been pretty dominate in her wins.

The Spaniard aggressive form has been too tough of a match for her opponents this tournament. She might need to add variety to her game against Vondrousova, as she plays all over, but this match seems to be Muguruza’s to lose.

Best Bet

These two players have never played each other in their career, so their head-to-head record is stuck at 0-0. Muguruza, the former World No. 1 is coming off a massive win over Kenin, that is sure to bleed confidence into her semifinal match. She has only dropped nine games total in her three matches at the tournament.

Vondrousova will look to showcase variety throughout the match, with wil make Muguruza have to rely on some drop shots and variety herself. But the power that comes with Muguruza looks to be too much for the young Czech player. I expect Muguruza to defeat her opponent in straight sets.

Pick: Muguruza (-225)

Barty Heads Straight to the Finals

Ashleigh Barty finds herself in the finals of the Yarra Valley Classic despite not playing a semifinal match. The current World No. 1 was expected the play Serena Williams in the semifinals, that was sure to be exciting to watch. But last night, it was announced that the 39-year old had withdrawn. The winner of the match between Vondrousova and Muguruza now know who they’ll be taking on in the final.
