2022 Australian Open Women’s Singles Odds & Picks to Win Each Quarter

The first Grand Slam of the year is here, with main draw play of the Australian Open beginning Monday, January 17th. It should be an exciting two weeks of tennis.

But who’s the best bet to win each quarter? Take a look below for the top 15 odds of each four quarters, and the best bet prediction.

1st Quarter Winner Odds

Ashleigh Barty

It shouldn’t come as a surprise here that Barty is the favorite. The Aussie is the favorite to win the tournament outright, and has held the World No. 1 slot for over 100 consecutive weeks.

Coming off a 14th title win in Adelaide earlier this month, Barty is in top form, and will be looking to capture the Grand Slam on home soil. But the 25-year old does not have an easy path to the finals. She’ll open her tournament up against a qualifier, but could start being tested as early as the second or third round.

Dark Horses

There are a handful of players in this quarter that could cause trouble. Maria Sakkari and Belinda Bencic, specifically. Sakkari had a career-defining season in 2021, and will look to continue her momentum into this year. Bencic has the opportunity to be the one to knock off Osaka, as the two could see each other in the third round.

Best Bet

It’s hard to think about betting against Barty here. She seems to be the best bet here, but a longer shot may be Sakkari.

2nd Quarter Winner Odds

Paula Badosa and Barbora Krejcikova

Badosa is listed at +400, with Krejcikova right behind her at +450. Both have been handed a tough opening match. Badosa will be opening her tournament up against Ajla Tomljanovic, while Krejcikova will be playing Andrea Petkovic.

The two are actually competing in the finals of the WTA Sydney Tennis Classic later today, so one will be hoping to bring the momentum and confidence of capturing a title to Melbourne.

Dark Horses

The top half of this quarter is a tough one. Coco Gauff is a player that has the capability to provide some early round upsets, that can change the course of the later rounds.

This quarter is also home to 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. The American has had her ups and downs, but has been a solid consistent player over the past couple of years.

Best Bet

If Badosa is able to get passed Tomljanovic in the first round, it seems like she would be the most likely to come out of this quarter.

3rd Quarter Winner Odds

Garbine Muguruza

The third quarter looks like it could be another tight one. And it’s possible we see a rematch of the WTA Finals with possibility of Muguruza and Anett Kontaveit going head-to-head.

Unlike a few of her other fellow WTA players, Muguruza’s draw is manageable. At least for the first few rounds. It doesn’t seem like she will get truly tested until maybe the fourth round, where she could go up against a former World No. 1 player in Simona Halep.

Dark Horses

Kontaveit and Danielle Collins are two players that could influence some later round matches if they are able to make it through their first couple opponents. Kontaveit has been playing really well, as a continuation from the end of last year, and should record a few wins here.

Best Bet

She can’t really be considered a dark horse since she has a resume full of success, but Halep could be someone that comes out on top of this quarter.

The Romanian is set to play the winner of the Emma Raducanu vs Sloane Stephens match, that is sure to be a close one. But after a year of battling injury, the 30-year has had a strong start to her year heading into the Grand Slam after winning the title at the Melbourne Summer Set.

Best Bet: Halep (+450)

4th Quarter Winner Odds

Iga Swiatek

The 20-year is a strong favorite to come out of this quarter. She’ll open her tournament up against a qualifier, but things could get tricky from the second round onwards. She could face the likes of Rebecca Peterson, Daria Kasatkina and Anastasija Sevastova as early as the second round.

Dark Horses

Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova are two to watch here, as both are powerful players who have found success in the past. Kerber opens her tournament up against Kaia Kanepi, and Kvitova will be facing Sorana Cirstea.

Best Bet

Swiatek looks to be the best bet coming out of this quarter, and with +200 odds compared to Sabalenka, listed at +500. It’s possible that her opponent might not be someone expected to make it as far as they did, but Swiatek should be the one to win the quarter.
