Rublev Upsets Nadal

The Russian is the heavy favorite in this semifinal match, listed at -435. Rublev is coming off a huge win, as he upset 11-time champion Nadal 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Beating Nadal in general is always a tough task, but on clay, it always seems that much more harder.

In a match that saw Nadal look tired, Rublev was all over the first set, not allowing the Spaniard to settle in at all. Nadal did save breakpoints at 3-1 when he was down in the second set, and looked to gain some momentum. This resulted in winning that second set, and evening out the score. But Rublev was able to break the 11-time champion almost right away in the third set, and it was game over.

Rublev will now look forward to his semifinal match against unseeded Ruud, who’s coming off an upset of his own.

Unseeded Ruud Reaches Semis

Ruud defeated defending champion Fognini in a dominating 6-4, 6-3 win, as he continues to have a strong showing this week at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Despite the straightforward score, this match included quite a bit of back and forth in both sets before Ruud was able to record the victory. It was tied 4-4 in the first set when Ruud was able break it open. He went on to win five consecutive games, resulting in a 6-4, 3-0 lead.

Fognini was then once again able to even it out to 3-3. Ruud then won the next three games to secure the win, and earn his spot in the final four of the tournament.

This semifinal match won’t be an easy task for Ruud, but in this tournament alone, he’s already upset three seeded players, with two of those matches being straight set wins.

Head-to-Head

These two players are actually fairly familiar with each other, with three matches under their belt in the past few years. Two of the three matches have come on an outdoor clay surface, and Rublev has won all three meetings.

Their last meeting comes earlier this year at the Australian Open Round of 16, where Ruud unfortunately retired from the match at 6-2, 7(7)-6(3).

Best Bet

This will be one of Ruud’s toughest matches, but he has already beat three seeded players on route to this semifinal. Rublev is coming off one of his biggest wins as he defeated Nadal.

Rublev has won the most ATP Tour matches this year. He currently has a 23-4 match record on the 2021 season, and that shouldn’t go unnoticed. He’s been one of the most consistent players on tour. He had a career best season in 2020, and has been able to continue his level of intensity well into 2021.

I’m going to give the edge to Rublev in this match. Ruud is a great player on clay, and we’ve seen how impressive he’s been playing all week, but Rublev has shown us day in and day out that he’s one of the best players on tour right now.

Best Bet: Rublev (-435); 2-0 (-113)
