In assessing the US Open women’s singles quarterfinal between Belinda Bencic and Emma Raducanu, bettors are left facing that age-old question. Should they back the proven commodity, or opt to keep riding with the hot hand?

Switzerland’s Bencic is ranked #12 in the world. She recently won the gold medal in women’s singles at the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games.

Toronto-born Raducanu, 18, who plays for Great Britain, is in her first Grand Slam women’s singles quarterfinal. She’s yet to drop a set in the tournament.

Oddsmakers are playing it safe and going with experience. Bencic is the -140 favorite to end the magical run of teenager Raducanu.

Wednesday’s match is slated for a 12:00 pm start in Flushing Meadows at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. ESPN will be carrying the broadcast.

Bencic’s Unbeaten Run

The #11 seed, Bencic is through to the quarterfinals of her third successive event. She’s in the US Open quarterfinals for the third time in her career. The Swiss player reached the US Open semifinals in 2019. Just like Raducanu, Bencic was a US Open quarterfinalist as a teenager. She reached the quarterfinals in 2014 at the age of 17.

Again, like Raducanu, no player has proven capable of taking a set off of Bencic in Flushing Meadows. Iga Swiatek, the 2020 French Open champion, came the closest. In their round of 16 match, the Polish player ended up forcing Bencic to a lengthy first-set tiebreaker. Ultimately, Bencic overcame Swiatek 7-6(14-12), 6-3.

Their tiebreaker set lasted 84 minutes and was the longest tiebreak of this year’s tournament. Bencic saved four set points. A 6-2, 6-2 loser to Swiatek in their previous meeting in Adelaide, Bencic won 74-percent of her first service points in this meeting.

Prior to that match, it’s been relatively smooth sailing for the Swiss player at the US Open. She opened with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Arantxa Rus. Martina Trevisan fell 6-1, 6-4 in the second round. Against #23 seed Jessica Pegula, Bencic was a 6-2, 6-4 third-round winner.

Raducanu Rolls Onward

Raducanu is just the third qualifier to reach the US Open quarterfinals during the Open era. It took her just 65 minutes to dispatch American world #43 Shelby Rogers 6-2, 6-1. In the third round, Rogers upset world #1 Ashleigh Barty.

Ranked #150 in the world, Raducanu has taken out three top-50 players in Flushing Meadows. She’s 5-0 in her career when facing players among the top 50 in the WTA rankings.

Raducanu won 11 straight games after falling behind 0-2. She dominated Rogers with her return game. Raducanu won 61-percent of points during Rogers’ service. Raducanu committed 14 unforced errors, compared to 29 by Rogers.

Raducanu has gone one step further than her round of 16 appearance earlier this year at Wimbledon. She’s done so without suffering a set setback. The Brit, ranked #150 in the world, routed Spain’s Sara Sorrribes Torbo 6-0, 6-1 in the third round. Zhang Shuai was her 6-2, 6-4 second-round victim. Raducanu’s opening-round performance was a 6-2, 6-3 verdict over Stefanie Vogele. In total, she’s only dropped 15 games.

Something Must Give

Something has to give because neither player has lost a set in this event. Going back to qualifying, Raducanu has won 14 straight sets.

Bencic holds a decided edge in service aces, 136-17. However, the strength of Raducanu’s play is her return game. She’s won 37-percent of return games, compared to just 26.6-percent for Bencic.

In Bencic, Raducanu is playing a seeded player and a top-20 player, for the first time in the tournament. She’s also facing someone like her, who appears to be on top of her game.

Bencic has also enjoyed previous runs this deep into the US Open, so her comfort zone figures to be another advantage for the Swiss player.
