With the Round of 16 wrapping up today, we look towards the men’s singles quarterfinals on Wednesday. All four matches are now set, and Berrettini and Auger-Aliassime will go head-to-head in what’s sure to be an exciting battle.

Now, Berrettini enters the match the favorite as he’s the higher seed and higher ranked between the two. But he’s also had a dominant grass court season so far, as he entered Wimbledon coming off a title win at the Queen’s Club Championship. Despite not winning a grass court title this season, Auger-Aliassime has also had himself an impressive season. He entered Wimbledon coming off a final appearance at the Stuttgart Open, and a semifinal appearance at the Halle Open.

Berrettini Extends Winning Streak

Italy’s Berrettini has extended his grass-court winning streak to nine when he defeated Ilya Ivashka 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 in just under two hours. Aside from his first-round match where he dropped a set, the Italian has been lights out since, winning the past three matches in straight sets.

To record his 30th win of the season, Berrettini won 32 of 38 first serve points, and dominated his match from start to finish. He didn’t give Ivashka a chance to gain any sort of momentum at any time.

The 25-year old has stated that he has more confidence than ever right now, as he should. He’ll look forward to the quarter’s where he’ll take on 16th seed Auger-Aliassime, who’s sure to be his toughest opponent yet.

Auger-Aliassime Upsets Zverev

The 20-year old Canadian is putting on a show at the All England Club this year. With his win over Alexander Zverev, Auger-Aliassime earned his spot in his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

After going up two sets to none, Auger-Aliassime found himself having to form a comeback as Zverev won the next two sets forcing a decider.

In a match that lasted just over four hours, the Canadian recorded 17 aces and managed 54 winners in a 6-4, 7-6(6), 3-6, 3-6, 6-4 win to upset the fourth seed.

In a matter of a couple weeks, and under Toni Nadal, Auger-Aliassime has put up a 10-2 record on grass. He’ll now look to continue the confidence he’s riding from defeating Zverev as he takes on another higher seed and ranked player in Berrettini.

Head-to-Head

We have one previous match to go off of between these two players. The 2019 Stuttgart finals on outdoor grass, where Berrettini won 6-4, 7-6(11). Be careful when looking at that match, the Canadian has grown substantially, and his game has matured quite a bit just in the past few months, let alone two years.

This is going to be a fun match to watch. Both of these players are strong, quick and explosive. Everything points to this quarterfinal match being offense heavy. Both Berrettini and Auger-Aliassime have strong serves and forehands that they rely on heavily. The Italian has recorded 67 aces over the course of his four matches, and the Canadian is not that far behind him with 49.

Something that both players will need to make a conscious effort to minimize will be their unforced errors. Both Berrettini and Auger-Aliassime play with such strength that their unforced error numbers are sometimes are higher than usual. The winner here will most likely be the one who records the least amount.

Once again, fatigue can start to play a part at this point in a Grand Slam. Yes, Auger-Aliassime is just 20-years old, but he’s coming off a five-set battle, and has spent more time on the court than Berrettini this tournament. It’s not just physical exhaustion, but mental as well.

Berrettini seems to have the slight edge in this match. I don’t think it’s going to go the full distance, but this won’t be a clean straight set win either.
