The second week of the 2021 Australian Open is now underway with round play almost completed and the quarterfinals about to start. It’s been a bit of a roller coaster down in Australian, now with the state of Victoria, which includes Melbourne being put into a lockdown for five days. Players are back to playing in front of no spectators, and won’t be seeing them until Thursday at the earliest.

Djokovic’s Battling Injury
Djokovic has been a favorite to win this tournament since the start, but he’s bee battling a muscular injury since his third round match, and he’s actually said that if this wasn’t a Grand Slam, he would’ve withdrawn from the tournament already. This helps to put into perspective the pain. But with a record eight Australian Open titles, and on a quest for his 18th Major trophy, the Serbian superstar will be fighting hard every match.
In his third round match where he developed the injury, he almost lost it. He was able to come out in the fifth set and seal the victory, but not before allowing Taylor Fritz to come back from being down two sets. His recent fourth round match against Milos Raonic also saw a few moments of weakness, but again, Djokovic was able to find a way to win, defeating the Canadian 7(7)-6(4), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Zverev’s 50th Grand Slam match win
The 23-year old has been playing great tennis at the tournament so far. He’s only gone on to drop one set, and it was the first set in the first round. Since then he’s been fairly dominant, not allowing his opponent to gain any momentuem. He defeated his fourth round opponent, Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 7(7)-6(5), 6-3 to record his 50th Grand Slam match, earning him a sport in the Aussie Open quarterfinals for the second straight year. Zverev sealed the victory with his 15th ace of the match.
Head-to-Head
These two players are no stranger to each other. This will be the eight time they have seen each other in their careers, and Djokovic leads the head-to-head 5-2. Their latest match came just earlier this year at the ATP Cup, where Djokovic won the tight match 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-5.

Djokovic is number one for a reason, he’s one of the toughest players one can face right now, but Zverev will be Djokovic’s biggest challenge of the tournament so far. If it wasn’t for battling an injury, I would say Djokovic without hesitation, and I’m sure he will push through what whatever pain he may have.
This won’t be an easy match for either player, but I’m going to give the edge to Djokovic due to experience. This is a match that could be Zverev’s as well, but Djokovic’s success and experience at the Aussie Open is second to none.
