The round of 16 at the US Open continues on Sunday night with a marquee matchup between Ben Shelton and Stefanos Tsitsipas on Arthur Ashe Stadium at roughly 7:00 pm ET.
World No. 9 Shelton enters as the heavy favorite, against No. 53 Tsitsipas, who’s still looking to regain his erstwhile top-5 form from the early 2020s.
My analysis weighs the lone prior matchup – which Tsitsipas won in Cincinnati in 2023 – alongside more-recent surface-specific metrics and current rankings, focusing on whether Shelton’s serve and heavy forehand can produce a different result this time.
Tsitsipas vs Shelton H2H Results
Tsitsipas leads the head-to-head 1-0 after defeating Shelton in straight sets in Cincinnati’s 2023 Round of 16. That result provides some tactical context, although the match was played several seasons ago and current form and surface performance remain central to this handicap.
Shelton vs Tsitsipas Predictions & Best Bets
The recent hard-court results support a more competitive match than a pure mismatch, but they still favor Shelton to win by multiple sets.
Set-Spread Pick: Shelton -1.5 (-133 at Kalshi)
Shelton’s first three wins in Flushing have all been four-set affairs and with Tsitsipas’ serve humming, it’s easy to see the Greek grabbing a set, whether via tiebreak or otherwise.
But Shelton’s 68.0% first-serve accuracy, 70.2% break-point save rate, and superior tiebreak record give him several ways to protect narrow leads.
While Tsitsipas’s stronger return-game rate (17.9% to 13.9%) and better second-serve return mark (49.7% to 46.0%) make him dangerous, Shelton’s hard-court Elo advantage and more-efficient match profile point to the American winning in four sets yet again.
Kalshi has the market-best price on Shelton -1.5 sets, with that prop currently trading at -133 (58 cents).
Under 40.5 Games (-113 at Polymarket)
My second pick is under 40.5 games, which is priced at -113 (53 cents) at Polymarket. Shelton’s 90.0% hold rate and 70.2% break-points saved suggest he can avoid extended service trouble, while his 62.2% tiebreak win rate gives him an edge if a set reaches 6-6.
Tsitsipas’ return numbers prevent this from being an automatic blowout, and a four-set match could threaten the total if multiple sets go long. Still, Shelton’s serve efficiency, stronger hard-court Elo, and ability to win pressure points on serve create a path to a 3-0 or efficient 3-1 result. The under remains playable at 40.5, but the set spread is the cleaner wager.
