Thiem’s Road to the Finals

The second seed was up against 2019 US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev in his semifinal match. Thiem was able to defeat him 6-2, 7-6(7), 7-6(5), earning himself a ticket to his first US Open final, becoming the first Austrian to do so. Medvedev entered the semifinals match having only been broken three times all tournament, in 68 service games and was widely considered the one to beat. But it was Thiem who dominated the match, winning in straight sets and ending Medvedev’s US Open run.

This is Thiem’s fourth Major final, but the first one where he hasn’t had to face one of tennis’s ‘Big 3,’ likely making this his best chance to win his first Grand Slam title.

Zverev’s Road to the Finals

On Saturday night, Zverev earned a spot in the US Open final, his first appearance in a Grand Slam final in his career. But in the middle of the match, it didn’t seem like this was going to happen. Going into the third set of the semifinals, Zverev trailed by two sets. He was not on his game.

He double-faulted, was hitting balls into the net on multiple occasions, and found himself in a deficit that he’s never faced before. But he somehow managed to come back from all the mistakes and issues he had earlier in the match, and beat his opponent Pablo Carreno Busta in a five set marathon: 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

What’s The Best Bet?

Thiem and Zverev will be going head-to-head for the 10th time in their careers, and the second time this year. The two last saw each other at the Australian Open where Thiem won 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(4). The two have played each other a total of three times at a Grand Slam event, and Thiem has won them all.

Thiem has also won the last three matches where these two have seen each other. The last time Zverev won was in 2016 on a hard court.

Thiem will look to control the match with his dominant forehand, and Zverev will be looking to keep Thiem on his toes with his huge serve. But what we saw in the previous round was some inconsistency from Zverev. He won’t be able to afford those in this finals match. Thiem has a much stronger return than Medvedev’s semifinal opponent, so his big first serve is not going to be able to save him every time this match.

Thiem will once again look to dominate the match with his offence from the baseline. Interestingly, he’s been standing quite a bit back from the baseline, which has given him more time to react, and wiggle round to hit his effective forehand.

The impression of this match is, although the odds aren’t that close, that it is going to be a battle. Expect it to go the distance if both players show up with their strengths. But it looks to be Thiem who will be awarded his first Grand Slam title.

Best Bet: [2] Thiem (-400)
