  • The top half of the women’s singles draw is scheduled to start play Tuesday, June 29
  • No. 1 seed Ashleigh Barty and No. 20 Coco Gauff are massive favorites in their first-round matches
  • We look at the odds, and spotlight three matches with interesting value

With defending champion Simona Halep out because of a calf injury, world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty gets the honor of walking out on Centre Court on the first Tuesday to begin play.

The rest of the top half of the draw will join her – assuming Monday’s weather issues don’t back everything up.

Barty and Serena Williams were co-favorites to win before the tournament began, although Barty has nudged slightly ahead over the last day or two.

Odds as of June 28 at DraftKings

Numerous players have injury questions as Wimbledon begins – notably Barty (left hip) and Victoria Azarenka (abdominal).

And there are Grand Slam women’s singles champions with an abject lack of experience on the grass.

Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, has played just one main-draw match at Wimbledon – and she lost it. Newly minted French Open champ Barbora Krejcikova will be making her main-draw debut in singles.

Bianca Andreescu vs Alizé Cornet Prediction

This first-round matchup couldn’t have been trickier for Andreescu, who has almost no experience on grass despite being the No. 7 player in the world.

Just a few weeks ago in Berlin, Cornet defeated the Canadian in her opening match, 7-6 (2), 7-5. To be fair, it was Andreescu’s first match on grass in three years.

This is Cornet’s 14th Wimbledon; she played every year from her debut in 2007 as a lucky loser to the most recent edition in 2019. She’s most often not done that well. Cornet has lost in the first round the last three editions, albeit to quality players. But she’ll have confidence going into this one, while Andreescu’s general state is a little uncertain.

Andreescu tradition almost dictates this one will go the distance.

Best Bet: Over 2.5 sets (+135)

Kiki Bertens vs Marta Kostyuk Prediction

Kostyuk is making her Wimbledon main-draw debut. But she played some good grass-court tennis coming in, and she hit her career-high ranking just two weeks ago.

Contrast that with Bertens, who is coming back from Achilles surgery and, at 29, has already announced she’ll be done at some point this season. She’s 1-6 this year, with her only win over a junior wild card ranked No. 901 at the Madrid tournament.

Bertens has had some good results on grass in recent years. But for someone recovering from that injury, who’s also a six-footer, the bending required and the uncertain movement on the lush, fresh, green surface may prove a challenge.

That’s why Kostyuk is the favorite. But Bertens has the impetus of her career finale. It could give her wings.

Best Bet: Bertens (+235)

Daria Kasatkina vs Patricia Maria Tig Prediction

Daria Kasatkina had a quarterfinal run in the women’s singles at Wimbledon three years ago. And she made the final in Birmingham a few weeks ago. But she is by no means a grass-court expert. Her heavily-spun groundstrokes don’t bounce up nearly as high on the grass, so that natural advantage in the rallies is neutralized.

But she’s playing well.

Tig leads their head-to-head 1-0, although that was a win on clay in Madrid back in 2016.

The Romanian has never won  a match at Wimbledon, not even in the qualifying.  But she has some grass skills.

Best Bet: Over 19.5 games (+125)
