Final Meeting of the Season

Saturday’s game is the third and final meeting between two teams sitting near the top of the 2023 WNBA Championship odds. But many believe they will eventually meet at some point in the playoffs, so this might not be the last time we see them square off.

The title-favorite Aces took the first game 90-84 on June 6 in Connecticut to jump out to a season series advantage, but Connecticut bounced back a few nights later on June 8 by taking down Las Vegas 94-77 to even the things at 1-1. The winner of Saturday’s game will own the tiebreaker and hold the series advantage, which could matter as the playoffs near and seeding is decided.

Aces Looking Unstoppable

Las Vegas has been the best team in the WNBA all season long, and it has looked even more impressive as of late while riding a league-best seven-game winning streak. Las Vegas has won 14 of 15 games to begin the year, with Connecticut being the only team to hand the Aces a loss entering Saturday, and are the first team since the 2016 Los Angeles Sparks to start the year 14-1.

The Aces — who dominated one of the teams many thought could challenge them for a league title against New York on Thursday — have incredible depth led by Jackie Young and A’ja Wilson, who are leading the team in scoring. The guard combo of Kelsey Plum and Chelsea Gray have a great supporting cast this year as well, especially as of late.

Las Vegas enters Saturday with the best offense in the league, averaging a league-best marks in points per game (93.1) and field goal percentage (50.3%) while also ranking second in the league in defensive rating (94.4).

Sun Finding Their Way Without a Star

Connecticut has been one of the top teams in the league this season and have been one of the only teams that has seemed to rattle Las Vegas and match up well against the Aces, but the Sun are a different-looking team this time around than the first two meetings.

Sun star center Brionna Jones, who played in the first two games between the two squads, is out for the year with an Achilles injury and her presence will be felt in this game and the rest of the year. With Jones’ absence, look for Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner, and others to have to step up and carry the load to fill in the massive hole left by Jones.

With that said, Connecticut still has the third-best offensive rating (103.2) and third-best defensive rating (96.7) in the WNBA.

Keys, Sun vs Aces Picks

The biggest key to this game will come down to who can control the paint. Both Las Vegas and Connecticut league the WNBA in points in the paint, with the Sun averaging a league-best 40.6 and the Aces right on their heels at 40.3 per game. Whoever can own that area should put themselves in a good spot to win the game.

When it comes to the outcome of the game, Las Vegas is playing too well right now and Connecticut is still trying to fully figure things out without its star center, so the Aces should be able to extend their winning streak to eight straight while improving to 9-0 at home this season.

As for the best bet of the game, go with the over on the mark of 168.5 placed as a combined total for both teams. The talent offensively on both squads will result in them going over 168.5 points.

  • The Pick: Over 168.5 (-110)
