First Matchup of Season

Thursday’s contest is the first of four meetings between the Liberty and Aces, though many believe they will again meet later in the postseason while competing for a title. The final three matchups will occur on August 6, Auguat 17 and August 28.

New York and Las Vegas did meet in the preseason opener on May 13 in Las Vegas, with the Aces pulling out a seven-point victory at home by a score of 84-77. That game is hard to use as a comparison of what we could expect during the regular season due to many of the key players on both teams playing less minutes than they would normally.

A season ago — though the rosters look different for both teams, notably for New York — the Liberty and Aces played each other three times, with Las Vegas taking two of those three games en route to eventually winning the WNBA title.

The Aces have looked unstoppable this season, and actually have been with the exception of a road loss to Connecticut on June 8. The top offense in the league has been headlined by Jackie Young and reigning MVP A’ja Wilson, with Young leading the team with 19.9 points per game and Wilson posting 19.6 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game this year. A player to watch for Las Vegas on Thursday is Kelsey Plum, who has averaged 21.5 points at point guard over the last two games.

The Liberty have been trying to muscle through building chemistry on the fly with a new-look roster, but have been dominant as of late. New York has been spearheaded by MVP candidate Breanna Stewart with 22.6 points, 10.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.7 blocks and 1.6 steals per game, and she oftentimes steps up for big games like Thursday’s matchup when here team needs her most. Sabrina Ionescu is another player to keep an eye on, averaging 18.5 points, 5.5 assists and 3.0 assists over her last two games.

Keys to the Game

The biggest key to Thursday’s game might be which team will be able to take a stand defensively or which team will ultimately be able to outlast the other offensively to pull out the win.

Both New York and Las Vegas have the top offenses in the WNBA, with the Aces ranking first in points per game (92.8) and field goal percentage (49.7%) and the Liberty coming in second in points per game (88.0) and field goal percentage (45.6%).

New York does hold an advantage in distributing the ball and being able to hurt teams from three, leading the league in assists (24.0) and three-point percentage (38.0%), while Las Vegas is second in both categories with 21.9 assists per contest and a 37.3 percent three-point mark.

When it comes to defense, the Aces hold the edge with a defensive rating of 93.8 (second in WNBA) compared to the Liberty’s mark of 98.1 (fifth in WNBA). Thursday’s game will come down to defense and who is able to make the final stand to pull out a victory.

Liberty vs Aces Picks

This game is one of the most anticipated matchups of the season and it should end up being a back-and-forth battle in Las Vegas. The interesting thing about this game is the Aces are a perfect 7-0 at home this year and the Liberty are an impressive 5-1 on the road, so both teams are going to come into the game confident.

In the end, Las Vegas will flex its depth and talent while being too much for New York and edging by for a win to extend the winning streak. For the best bet of the night in the Liberty vs Aces odds, go with the Liberty covering the 6.5-point spread. This game will likely be decided by less than that mark.
