Patrick Mahomes was awarded his second NFL MVP award at the NFL Honors on Thursday, February 9. The Chiefs QB led his team to a 14-3 regular season record, locking up the top seed in the AFC playoffs. Mahomes led the NFL in passing yards (5,250) and passing touchdowns (41).

Entering the 2022 season, the questions were: can Aaron Rodgers win a third straight NFL MVP without Davante Adams? How much will the loss of Tyreek Hill affect Patrick Mahomes? Is it Josh Allen’s time to shine?

Sportsbooks thought they had the answers to those questions, but were wrong in many places. Have a look at what the 2022-23 NFL MVP odds opened at and how they moved throughout the offseason and regular season.

2022 NFL MVP Odds

Even with Aaron Rodgers’ future with the Packers being very uncertain entering March, sportsbooks obviously didn’t feel a change of scenery, or another birthday, for the back-to-back NFL MVP would be detrimental at all. Rodgers still opened as a top three contender to win the 2022 NFL MVP award based on the opening odds. His odds did not change much after he announced he would be returning to the Packers. They did fade shortly after Green Bay traded away Davante Adams, though.

Younger quarterbacks took over the top of the odds board, as Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Jalen Hurts were the top four contenders for the latter part of the season. We did not see any sportsbooks reopen NFL MVP odds – or any other player award – since Week 18 kicked off.

Here are some notes on the 2022-23 NFL MVP odds movement:

  • [December 19] Jalen Hurts was the odds-on favorite to win NFL MVP after Sunday of Week 15. Hurts’ odds were -145 with Patrick Mahomes trailing at +150. But with news surfacing that Hurts suffered a sprained shoulder against the Bears, and potentially worse news to come, the Eagles’ QB has seen his MVP odds plummet to as long as +700. Mahomes has taken back over as the heavy favorite.
  • [December 11] For the first time this season, Jalen Hurts is the favorite to win NFL MVP. Hurts threw for 217 yards and two TDs, while adding 77 yards on the ground and another touchdown, in Philadelphia’s Week 14 crushing of the Giants. Hurts’ odds improved from +160 to -110, while Mahomes, who was favored entering the week, faded from +115 to +200 after throwing three interceptions against the Broncos.
  • [December 4] A loss to the Bengals sees Patrick Mahomes’ odds fade from-160 to -110. Mahomes remains the favorite, but Jalen Hurts is closing in after throwing for 380 yards and three touchdowns in Week 13. Hurts’ odds improved from +400 to +170. A turnover-filled game saw Tua Tagovailoa drop from the top three contenders, allowing Joe Burrow to sneak in with his odds moving from +1800 to +1000 after outdueling the Chiefs.
  • [November 20] Patrick Mahomes led his Chiefs to another big win over the Chargers in Week 11, throwing for 329 yards and three touchdowns. The Chiefs QB has become the odds-on favorite to win NFL MVP after another great performance. Mahomes’ odds improved from +120 to -110.
  • [November 14] After throwing two costly interceptions in the Bills loss to the Vikings in Week 10, Josh Allen has fallen out of the top tier of NFL MVP contenders. Allen’s odds faded from +275 to +500. After Philadelphia suffered their first loss of the season, Jalen Hurts saw his odds fade from +280 to +600.
  • [November 7] Josh Allen remained the favorite to win NFL MVP after losing to the Jets in Week 9. His odds faded from +125 to +225. HOWEVER, as concern continued to grow on Monday over the elbow injury Allen suffered against the Jets, Mahomes has swooped in as the new favorite with +200 odds. Geno Smith’s odds took a major leap after Week 9, going from +10000 to +2500, tying the Seahawks QB for the sixth-best odds to win the award.
  • [October 31] Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes, and Josh Allen all have better than 4-1 odds to win NFL MVP after Week 8. Allen is the favorite at +125.
  • [October 16] Josh Allen’s NFL MVP odds have improved from +200 to +125 after he led the Bills to a big victory in Kansas City. Mahomes’ odds faded from +450 to +550 with the loss to Allen’s Bills, and falls back to third as Jalen Hurts now has the second-best odds to win the award.
  • [September 29] Tua Tagovailoa’s NFL MVP odds have been removed from the board following his scary head injury during Thursday Night Football of Week 4. Tagovailoa’s odds were +1400 entering the game.
  • [September 25] Although his team lost in Week 3, Josh Allen remains the favorite to win NFL MVP. Allen’s odds did not budge from the +300 they were listed at entering the weekend. Lamar Jackson’s NFL MVP odds improved from +1200 to +700 after another big game.
  • [September 20] Josh Allen is back to being the favorite to win NFL MVP at all sportsbooks, moving from +450 to +300 after lighting up the Titans for 317 yards and four touchdowns. Jalen Hurts now has the third-best NFL MVP odds, as he improved from +1400 to +800 after an extremely impressive showing against the Vikings.
  • [September 19] After a wild fourth quarter comeback against the Ravens that saw Tua Tagovailoa throw for 469 yards and six touchdowns, the Dolphins QB has seen his NFL MVP odds improve from +4000 to +1800, which are tied for the seventh-best odds on the board.
  • [September 12] The NFL MVP odds are very different depending on which sportsbook you are looking at. Caesars Sportsbook and Barstool Sportsbook both list Patrick Mahomes as their favorite, with Barstool having the Chiefs QB as short as +300 following his five touchdowns against the Cardinals. BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel all have kept Josh Allen as their favorite. Jalen Hurts has also vaulted himself into the top five contenders after throwing for 243 yards and adding another 90 on the ground. Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, and Russell Wilson, on the other hand, saw their NFL MVP odds plummet following awful Week 1 showings – Wilson didn’t play horrible, but his Broncos were upset by the Seahawks.
  • [September 7] Looking to the aggregate NFL MVP odds, Justin Herbert has jumped Aaron Rodgers for the fourth-best odds on the board. Tua Tagovailoa, Kirk Cousins, and Trey Lance have all seen their odds to win NFL MVP improve ahead of kickoff as well. Lance has gone from +3500 to +2750.
  • [July 26] Josh Allen is the new favorite to win 2022-23 NFL MVP. Allen has taken over for Mahomes after the Chiefs QB saw his favorite target get traded to the Dolphins, and other AFC West teams really improve their rosters this offseason. Jalen Hurts has seen his MVP odds improve significantly, from +5000 to +3000, with the Eagles adding AJ Brown.
  • [March 23] In spite of losing his best receiver, as Kansas City traded Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins, Patrick Mahomes’ NFL MVP odds have not moved yet at Caesars Sportsbook. Mahomes remains the favorite at +750. However, FanDuel now lists Mahomes and Josh Allen as the co-favorites, and DraftKings has Allen as the favorite. You can get Mahomes at +800 odds at DraftKings Sportsbook App if you don’t believe the loss of Hill will slow the QB down.
  • [March 18] Deshaun Watson’s NFL MVP odds have improved further to +2000 after the QB has chosen to waive his no-trade clause to be dealt to the Cleveland Browns. Aaron Rodgers’ MVP odds have daded from +800 to +1000 after his Packers traded away his favorite receiver, Davante Adams. Derek Carr has not seen any movement resulting from the Adams trade, though.
  • [March 14] Tom Brady announced he will forego retirement and return to the Buccaneers for the 2022-23 NFL season on Sunday night. Even in retirement, sportsbooks left Brady on the board for NFL MVP odds, but at a lengthy +4500. He is now listed at just +900, tied for the third-best, in the odds to win NFL MVP. Russell Wilson’s MVP odds have continued to improve as well since he was traded to the Broncos. Wilson’s odds have improved from +3000 to +1500, making him a top seven contender. Deshaun Watson, who had all criminal charges dropped late last week, is now given +2500 odds to win MVP.
  • [February 16] Online sportsbook apps have begun opening their 2022 NFL MVP odds. Caesars Sportsbook has opened with Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers listed as the co-favorites at +700 odds. However, Barstool Sportsbook has opened Josh Allen as the favorite at +500 odds. This is in line with Barstool also having the Bills listed as the favorites in their Super Bowl odds. Taking the average across the sportsbooks with NFL MVP odds available, Patrick Mahomes is considered the favorite. Oddly enough, Tom Brady has been given +4500 odds to win the 2022 NFL MVP, despite announcing his retirement. He has better odds than a number of active quarterbacks, including: Baker Mayfield, Kirk Cousins, and Carson Wentz.
