- It’s essential that a defenseman not miss any time to injury. In the last 11 years, the most games missed by a Norris Trophy winner was six, when PK Subban sat out the start of the 2012-2013 season in a contract holdout. Werenski played 75 games in his 2026 win.
- Playoff pedigree matters. Adam Fox in 2021 was the first Norris Trophy winner on a non-playoff team since the award’s inception in 1954.
- It isn’t an offense-only award. A Norris winner has to play at an elite level in all facets of the game, including the power play, the penalty kill, and even strength.
- You don’t have to hit 90 points. Werenski won the 2026 Norris with 81 points and a record-setting two-way season, proving elite production paired with defense can top a pure point-chase.

Zach Werenski’s 2026 win was his first Norris Trophy, and it came on a record-setting season for a Columbus blueliner: 22 goals, 59 assists and 81 points in 75 games. He became the sixth American-born player to win the award, edging Cale Makar and Rasmus Dahlin in the vote.
