A trip to the quarterfinals is on the line Wednesday when Botic Van de Zandschulp and Luciano Darderi collide in Round of 16 action at the ATP Winston-Salem event.
The betting market paints Van de Zandschulp as the chalk (entering as a -150 betting favorite), but the single most important question is whether Darderi’s massive ATP ranking advantage will dictate the outcome. I
It gets underway this afternoon at 2pm ET from Stadium Court at Wake Forest University Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Tennis Channel carries the broadcast in the United States, while Canadians can tune in on TSN.

Van De Zandschulp vs Darderi Predictions and Best Bets
- Pick: Darderi Moneyline (+138 at Kalshi)
Instead of laying juice at traditional sportsbooks, I am turning to Kalshi, where a 42¢ contract on Darderi translates to a juicy +138 American odds payout.
Darderi currently holds the No. 22 spot in the ATP rankings with 2,175 points, easily outpacing Van de Zandschulp, who sits at a distant No. 71 with just 834 points. The Italian also owns the stronger overall Elo rating, 1,826.3 to 1,761.9, although Botic’s hard-court Elo is slightly better (1,739.4 to 1,698.6) according to Tennis Abstract. That surface split is a reason to respect the favorite, but it does not erase Darderi’s broader performance edge.
The match-level numbers explain why I am willing to take the price. Darderi has the better dominance ratio (1.110 to 1.006), breakpoint-prevail figure (1.099 to 1.046), match efficiency (1.255 to 0.857), and return-games-won rate (23.7% to 20.3%), per Tennis Ratio. He also wins more second-serve points, 51.2% to 47.3%, a valuable edge in a matchup likely to feature pressure on vulnerable second deliveries. Botic is steadier on first-serve accuracy and service games won, but Darderi’s stronger return profile and overall efficiency give him multiple paths to create the upset.
This disparity is equally pronounced in the year-to-date ATP Race, where Darderi ranks No. 17 with 1,900 points compared to the Dutchman’s No. 63 standing at 730 points. Darderi’s recent hard-court sample has been uneven, including losses to Hijikata and Nakashima, but he just advanced in Winston-Salem and has repeatedly shown he can extend or defeat quality opposition. With the market still heavily favoring Van de Zandschulp, I will gladly take the statistically superior player at plus money.
- Pick: Over 22.5 Total Games (-108 at Polymarket)
This Round of 16 battle projects as a lengthy, competitive tilt between a sportsbook favorite and a statistically superior underdog. The data supports a close contest: Darderi wins 55.2% of his tiebreaks versus Botic’s 48.6%, while both players create and defend roughly half a breakpoint per game. Darderi’s 23.7% return-games-won rate should generate scoreboard pressure, but Botic’s 80.4% service-games-won mark and 73.6% first-serve points won make a one-sided result less likely.
The recent results also point toward resistance rather than an automatic rout. Darderi has played several hard-fought three-set matches in his recent run, while Botic’s current hard-court form includes wins over Shevchenko and a competitive victory over Hurkacz. I am locking in the Over 22.5 games, banking on the combination of Botic’s serve, Darderi’s return pressure, and Darderi’s tiebreak strength to produce at least one tight set or tiebreak.
