A productive offseason continued for the Philadelphia Eagles at the 2019 NFL Draft. The Eagles built on a series of offseason signings at the Draft, addressing positional needs and adding depth.

The squad’s moves have not gone unnoticed, with Philadelphia making steady gains in Super Bowl futures betting. They now sit just shy of the favorites at +1400 to win the Lombardi Trophy in 2020.

Eagles Hampered by Inconsistency in 2018

The Eagles struggled to produce consistent results during the 2018 NFL season. The squad entered Thanksgiving Weekend with a middling 4-6 record, and were once again forced to turn to Super Bowl 52 hero Nick Foles late in the season after shutting down starting quarterback Carson Wentz with a back injury.

Of course, Foles did what he does best, rallying the Eagles to three straight victories to eke out a playoff berth and a subsequent victory on Wild Card Weekend.

But they bowed out of the postseason in the NFC Divisional Playoffs, and then Foles left in free agency. That led to the squad opening with lengthy +2000 Super Bowl odds.

A Busy Offseason in Philadelphia

However, with Wentz on the mend, the Eagles embarked on a signing spree, coming to terms with free agent defensive tackle Malik Jackson and extending center Jason Kelce, while pulling the trigger on a deal to re-acquire wide receiver DeSean Jackson from Tampa Bay.

Those moves helped lift Philadelphia to a +1600 bet going into the Draft, where they also made additions that could have immediate impact. Howie Roseman added offensive tackle Andre Dillard out of Washington State, running back Miles Sanders out of Penn State, and receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside from Stanford.

But have the Eagles done enough to deserve serious consideration as the strongest Super Bowl bet in the NFC?

Wentz Key to Eagles Success in 2019

A lot of Philly’s success/failure will depend on Wentz. Taken second overall by the Eagles in 2016, Wentz has been plagued by injuries in each of the past two seasons, and now faces real concerns about his long-term durability. In addition, the Eagles are far from a lock to return to the top of the NFC East, despite currently sitting as -105 chalk in the divisional futures.

Last season’s division champions, the Dallas Cowboys, had a quiet winter, but have been largely successful in keeping the group together that won 10 games last season. They should also be getting Travis Frederick back from Guillain-Barré Syndrome, an autoimmune disease that cost the two-time All-Pro center the entire 2018 season.

Then of course there are the NFC’s big three, the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, and defending conference champion Los Angeles Rams.

While the Bears entered the winter in need of upgrades on offense, and were without a pick until the third round of the NFL Draft, they remain a formidable defensive force.

Both the Rams and Saints return to action with lots to prove. With Drew Brees under center, the Saints will once again be among the top scoring teams in the NFL, while the experience gained from last February’s trip to the Super Bowl will likely benefit the Rams.

In addition, both the Saints and Rams are likely to benefit from playing in weak divisions.

New Orleans is the only NFC South squad favored to win over 8.0 games, while the Seattle Seahawks, who are pegged as a -110 bet to win over 8.5 games, are once again the most likely team to pose any threat to the Rams in the NFC West.

A lot can change in a matter of weeks in the NFL, as the Eagles discovered last season. However, it is likely to take a number of breakthrough performances, the continued good health of Carson Wentz, and a little bad luck among the Eagles’ NFC rivals to bring the Super Bowl back to Philadelphia.
