Nationals, Twins Look to Overcome Slumps in Critical Interleague Matchup
After missing a golden opportunity to close the gap on the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves during a four-game series this past weekend, the Washington Nationals look to rebound when they open a three-game interleague set with the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.
The Nationals saw their recent struggles continue in Atlanta this weekend, dropping three of four to fall to 2-5 in their past seven contests. The slide has all but taken Washington out of the hunt for top spot in the NL East, where they now lag 9.5 games back of Atlanta with just 20 games remaining.
The #Braves' Magic Number is 11.
Atlanta is on pace for its first 100-win season since 2003.
Even if the Braves go 9-9 in their final 18 games to finish with 98 wins, the Nationals would have to go 19-1 in their final 20 games just to catch Atlanta in the NL East standings. pic.twitter.com/Ll1gSD2utN

Washington continues to lead the way on the NL wild card standings, 2.5 games up on the Chicago Cubs.
However, the Nationals continue to produce streaky results on the road. With their series loss this past weekend, Washington saw a five-game road win streak halted, and have posted victories in just three of their past away series.
While the Nationals have enjoyed success in interleague play this season, going 9-5, they are winless in four contests in Minnesota since June 2007.
Nationals vs Twins Probable Starting Pitchers
Anibal Sanchez | September 10 | Jose Berrios |
Stephen Strasburg | September 11 | Martin Perez |
Patrick Corbin | September 12 | Kyle Gibson |
The Twins have also battled inconsistency during their bid to lock up top spot in the AL Central. Minnesota missed a chance to bury second-place Cleveland over the weekend, dropping two of three to the Indians to fall to 2-3 in the club’s past five outings.
Run production has emerged as an issue for their typically high-powered offense during their skid, with the club tallying just two runs in four of their past five outings.
Twins' starter ERAs since July 1:
2.88 — Michael Pineda
4.95 — Jake Odorizzi
5.11 — Kyle Gibson
5.37 — Jose Berrios
5.68 — Martin PerezPineda was the only starter keeping the rotation from imploding. Lewis Thorpe and/or Devin Smeltzer are capable fill-ins, but this is a mess.

Concerns also exist about the Twins’ probable starters in this series. Tuesday night’s expected starter Jose Berrios surrendered five or more earned runs in three of his past six outings, while Thursday’s starter Kyle Gibson has allowed 13 earned runs in 17.0 innings work over his past three starts, and has failed to earn a win in his past four starts against interleague opponents.
Pick: Nationals (-115)
Boston Red Sox vs Toronto Blue Jays Series Price

Blue Jays Clash with Slumping Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox will try to break out of a 3-6 slide that has all but eliminated them from postseason contention when they travel north of the border on Tuesday to open a three-game series with the division rival Toronto Blue Jays.
Boston hits the road for five games after being dominated by the New York Yankees, dropping three of four to the AL East leaders at Fenway Park. Boston was outscored by a wide 20-6 margin while falling to defeat in the final three games of the series, and now sit eight games back of Oakland in the hunt for the second AL wild card.
The #RedSox have scored 28 runs in September.
The #Astros just scored 32 runs in 10 innings.

Despite their recent woes, the Red Sox remain steady performers on the road, going 8-2 over their past 10 contests and posted four straight series victories. The club has also performed well when visiting opponents sporting losing records, going 10-4 in their past 14, including two of three in Toronto when they last visited Rogers Centre in early July.
That continued a steady track record of success on the road against the Blue Jays, with Boston going 21-7 in 28 away dates with Toronto since September 2016.
Red Sox vs Blue Jays Probable Starting Pitchers
Nathan Eovaldi | September 10 | T.J. Zeuch |
Jhoulys Chacin | September 11 | Trent Thornton |
TBD | September 12 | Clay Buchholz |
A series with the Red Sox could not have come at a worse time for the Blue Jays, who return home after going winless in a six-game road trip that featured stops in Atlanta and Tampa Bay. After showing signs of returning to respectability immediately following the All-Star Break, the Blue Jays now find themselves mired in a slump that has seen them fall to defeat in 16 of 19 outings.
Oh, and here's the second-to-last out.

Run production is a massive concern for Toronto. The Blue Jays’ promising young lineup has gone silent during the club’s slide, averaging a dismal 2.79 runs per game, and has been equally inept at containing opposing hitters, allowing six or more runs in six of 10 outings.
Home cooking has provided no relief for the Blue Jays. The club has failed to tally consecutive wins during a 3-6 run at Rogers Centre, and has posted just two series wins on home turf since the beginning of June.
Pick: Blue Jays (+130)
