The Calder Trophy is presented annually to the NHL rookie who is deemed to be the most proficient among first-year players.
To be eligible for the Calder, a player cannot have played more than 25 NHL games in any previous season, or six or more NHL games in each of two previous seasons, and must be under 26 on September 15.
There is no clear front-runner this time. Matthew Schaefer set the bar with a unanimous, record-setting rookie season in 2026, and the 2026-27 class features No. 1 overall pick Gavin McKenna, Ivar Stenberg, Cole Hutson and Porter Martone among the contenders.

Notable Calder Trends
- Matthew Schaefer set a high bar in 2026, winning in a unanimous vote (the first since Teemu Selanne in 1992-93) as the youngest Calder winner ever at 18.
- Defensemen have taken over the award. Cale Makar (2020), Moritz Seider (2022), Lane Hutson (2025) and Schaefer (2026) mean blueliners have won four of the last seven Calders.
- No goalie has won the Calder since Steve Mason with Columbus in 2009.

Top Calder Trophy Candidates
Gavin McKenna – Toronto Maple Leafs
McKenna went first overall to Toronto in the 2026 draft out of Penn State and signed his three-year entry-level deal over the summer.
He has six points through his first 10 NHL games, including his first power-play goal October 19, and averages 2:35 of power-play time per game. That offensive opportunity keeps him among the favorites in the Calder market.
Porter Martone – Philadelphia Flyers
The sixth pick of the 2025 draft got a nine-game look late in 2025-26 and did enough to stay rookie-eligible. Martone skated with Noah Cates and Matvei Michkov in Philadelphia’s October 24 lineup and contributed a power-play goal and an assist against Anaheim. He remains among McKenna’s challengers.
James Hagens – Boston Bruins
Hagens, the seventh pick in 2025, signed his entry-level contract after two seasons at Boston College and enters the season on Boston’s NHL roster. His skating and playmaking give him real upside, though his projected third-line role limits his immediate scoring opportunities.
Ivar Stenberg – San Jose Sharks
Taken second overall by San Jose in 2026, Stenberg signed his entry-level deal after a strong season with Frolunda of the SHL. A high pick joining a rebuilding Sharks team should get every chance to produce as a rookie.
Stenberg scored his first NHL goal on the power play and added an assist against Boston on October 13. Through his first 10 games, he has seven points, including six on the power play, where he gets first-unit time with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith.
Anton Frondell – Chicago Blackhawks
The third pick in 2025 debuted late last season and kept his eligibility, and he is ready for his first full NHL run.
Frondell centers Chicago’s second line between Tyler Bertuzzi and Jordan Greenway in the projected lineup for October 25. Bedard returned October 13 after shoulder surgery, centering the top line with Roman Kantserov and Patrick Kane and assisting on Kantserov’s power-play goal.
