The Arizona Coyotes entered this season with an increased level of optimism that they would finally break through and end their seven-year playoff drought – and then they proceeded to lose their first two games. However, they’ve fought through that tough start to post points in five straight (4-0-1) and they head to New York to face a Rangers team that is tied with Minnesota for the second fewest points in the NHL (2-4-0).

Coyotes Getting it Done in Both Ends

Last season the Coyotes were fifth in the NHL with just 2.68 goals against per contest and this season they’ve been even better, giving up just 1.86 goals per game, good for second in the league (behind only the Anaheim Ducks).

The duo of Darcy Kuemper and Antti Raanta have been unbelievable, allowing no more than two goals in regulation in any of their seven contests. Now that the goal scoring has picked up, they’ve turned the great goaltending into victories (they scored just one goal in the first two contests). They haven’t been relying on a single line to put the biscuit in the basket either, with nine skaters registering at least four points.

Rangers Going in the Opposite Direction

The Rangers have had nearly the exact opposite start to the season than the Coyotes – they won their first two contests but have lost four straight in regulation. They’ve allowed 3.67 goals per game which is fourth worst in the league so they haven’t been able to outscore their problems in the crease.

They’re a middling team in scoring, despite signing prized free agent Artemi Panarin (six points) and adding Kaapo Kakko with the second overall draft pick (just one goal).

Early season predictions had the Rangers struggling again this year and it feels that this will be the same throughout the season. Also of note, the Rangers have not only lost those four games in a row, but lost all of them against the spread as well.
