The last official PGA Tour event in 2020 is the Mayakoba Classic, and though there are only five of the top-25 golfers in the world competing, two big names are teeing it up.
World #3 Justin Thomas is competing at this tournament for the first time since 2014, and he finds himself a huge +600 favorite to win for the third time this year. Brooks Koepka, who is competing at this venue for the first time since 2013, is the second favorite behind Thomas.
In the 13-year history of the Mayakoba Classic, close calls are the norm, with all but one (Harris English in 2013) resulting in a two-shot victory or fewer. The last three champions have took home the title by a single stroke, including Brendon Todd last year, who returns to defend his crown.

English Ready to Return to Winning Ways
Harris English, who won this tournament way back in 2013 for his second career PGA Tour title, has quietly been putting together some strong golf since June – he’s made twelve of the last thirteen cuts and he’s been inside the top-25 ten times.

During that span, the 31-year-old has moved from 155th to 33rd in the world, which included a T-6 in his last start at the RSM Classic, a fourth place result at the US Open and a runner-up at the Northern Trust.
In 2020, English was seventh in total strokes gained on the PGA Tour, and with a victory in 2013 and a fifth place showing at this track last year, he clearly comes in with a lot of momentum on a course he likes.
Though that Mayakoba Classic title in 2013 was the last of his two victories, English (+1400) seems poised to get back into the winner’s circle and this could be the perfect week to do it against a field that doesn’t boast a ton of top-tier talent.
Last Five Mayakoba Classic Winners

2018 | Matt Kuchar (-22) |

2016 | Pat Perez (-21) |
2015 | Graeme McDowell (-18) Playoff |
Mayakoba Classic Best Value Picks
- Corey Conners (+3300): The 2019 Valero Texas Open champion has been playing solidly, making six straight cuts. In his last four times teeing it up, he’s gone T-8, T-24, T-10, and a T-10 at the Masters. Led the PGA Tour in ball striking in 2020. Second in birdies in the early going of the 2020-21 season.
- Carlos Ortiz (+5000): Coming in off his first PGA Tour victory, where he defeated Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama by two shots at the Houston Open. Local product was T-2 at this event last year, where he nearly became the first Mexican to win on home soil at this tournament.
- Sebastian Munoz (+6000): Before not making the weekend at the RSM Classic, had made ten straight cuts. Seven of those resulted in top-25 finishes. Fourth in total birdies in the 2020-21 season.
