  • Liverpool host RB Leipzig in the second leg of their Round of 16 Champions League matchup on Wednesday, March 10th at 3:00 pm EST
  • Liverpool won the first leg by a score of 2-0 at the same venue they will be playing at in the midweek, the Puskas Arena in Budapest
  • Currently, Liverpool are the narrow favorites with a moneyline of +138

In the first leg of this Champions League knockout tie, Liverpool slipped past RB Leipzig thanks to a pair of goals from Mo Salah and Sadio Mane. However, it was not as much about Liverpool’s success as it was RB Leipzig’s crucial slip-ups in this fixture. Now Liverpool has two away goals and a massive advantage going into this second leg Liverpool vs RB Leipzig match on Wednesday.

Nonetheless, it will take a miracle to pull a good performance out from this current Liverpool side as they just suffered their sixth consecutive home defeat in the Premier League to Fulham on Sunday.

The Reds have only won four games out of their last 13 and look desperate for changes. Klopp got the chance to rest the likes of Thiago, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, and Sadio Mane this weekend, but it is hard to tell if they can actually make a difference at the moment.

For RB Leipzig, they have won four in a row since their defeat to Liverpool. All in all, their performance against Liverpool was not that bad and was tactically very sound. Aside from some individual errors, they created chances and tested the English champions. Given Liverpool’s awful form, they should be hopeful of a dramatic turnaround in Budapest.

The Current Liverpool Situation is Unprecedented

It is rare in football that we see a team like Liverpool fall so far from grace, so quickly. Their struggles in the Premier League have stemmed from a combination of injuries and just overrun tactics that teams are used to. Currently, they have no leadership in defense without Virgil van Dijk and their midfield is depleted without Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, who have had to help on defense.

The amount of defeats they have suffered this year as defending champions is astounding and it seems as though playing at Anfield is just making it worse. Luckily, this game will not be played in England and we all know how much this team and city loves the Champions League. In fact, Liverpool has never been knocked out of the Champions League after winning the first away leg so it will be very interesting to see how well they fare on Wednesday.

RB Leipzig Cannot Stop Scoring

Since playing Liverpool a few weeks ago, RB Leipzig has won four Bundesliga matches and scored three goals in four of them. The side managed by Julian Nagelsmann is playing some scintillating football at the moment, which is cause for concern for Liverpool’s academy defense. Christopher Nkunku leads the Leipzig attack with six goals this season, but this team likes to use an array of goal scorers in their attack. Five other players have contributed four or more goals this season for them which goes to show how talented they are around the pitch.

Furthermore, their defense is as solid as a rock, having only conceded 20 times this year domestically. Dayot Upamecano is possibly this team’s most influential player and he will be what holds them together while they try to attack Liverpool. Starting the game out 2-0 down is not ideal for any team but this RB Leipzig side has the grit and creativity to challenge Liverpool, in a dark time for their club.

Liverpool vs RB Leipzig Best Bet

Overall, the best bet for this match is the RB Leipzig moneyline at +188. I do favor Liverpool to advance, but I could easily see RB Leipzig winning this second leg in regular time by a score of 1-0. Liverpool have lost too often since the turn of their year, and they have lost to some really low-level opponents. RB Leipzig are a talented side and they will push Liverpool to the bitter end.

My Pick: RB Leipzig moneyline (+188)
