Winning Efforts Last Week
Both teams had convincing road victories last week as the Browns blasted the Cincinnati Bengals 41-16 and the Patriots handled the Carolina Panthers 24-6.
Baker Mayfield threw for two touchdown and Nick Chubb ran for 137 yards to lead the Browns. Cornerback Denzel Ward returned an interception 99 yards for a TD to open the scoring.

Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones overcame two early interceptions to throw for 139 yards and a score. New England intercepted Sam Darnold three time and cornerback J.C. Jackson ran one of the picks back 88 yards for a touchdown.
The Patriots have won the last three meetings against the Browns, including 27-13 in 2019. The Browns’ last win in the series came in 2010.
Browns Offense vs Patriots Offense
The Browns, who lead the NFL in rushing yardage, will be without their top two running backs. Chubb was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list this week and has been ruled out while backup Kareem Hunt (hip) will miss his fourth straight game.
The bulk of the ball-carrying load will go to D’Ernest Johnson. He started against the Denver Broncos in Week 7 and proved capable by rushing for 146 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries in a 17-14 victory.

Johnson will be running behind two of the best pulling guards in the league in Joel Bitonio and Wyatt Teller. The Browns committed to $104 million in contract extensions to the duo this week.
The Browns could use a big game from Johnson as relying on Mayfield might prove problematic. Mayfield has an injured left (non-throwing) and shoulder, and the Patriots defense is spearheaded by linebacker Matt Judon with nine sacks and Jackson with five interceptions.
 Patriots Defense vs Browns Offense
The Patriots also have questions at running back. Starter Damien Harris and rookie Rhamondre Stevenson are both in the concussion protocol.
That leaves third-down back Brandon Bolden at the top of the depth chart. He is noted more for his receiving with 22 catches for 189 yards and one TD. Bolden has 22 rushes for 108 yards.

Jones is having a fine rookie season but could face some difficulties if forced to shoulder too much of the load against the Browns, who are third in the NFL in total defense. The first-round draft pick from Alabama has completed at least 70% of his passes in five of nine games
With 12 sacks at midseason, Browns defensive end Myles Garrett is already just two away from the franchise record set by Reggie Camp in 1984.
Browns vs Patriots Injury Report
Defensive end Takkarist McKinley (groin) will also miss the game for the Browns. Cornerback Greedy Williams (shoulder) is questionable.
Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins (ankle) is doubtful.
Still can’t get over this INT by Jamie Collins. Truly a remarkable play. 😳

Harris and Stevenson are among a host of players questionable with punter Jake Bailey (right knee), linebackers Ja’Whaun Bentley (ribs), Dont’a Hightower (ankle) and Kyle Van Noy (groin), kicker Nick Folk (left knee), wide receivers N’Keal Harry (knee) and Gunner Olszewski (concussion), guard Shaq Mason (abdomen), cornerback Jalen Mills (thigh) and tight end Jonnu Smith (shoulder).
Browns vs Patriots Prediction
The Browns showed they can win with Johnson as their featured back three weeks ago. It won’t be easy against the Patriots but look for Cleveland’s defense to give Jones problems and keep the game close.
The Pick: Browns +2.5 (-112)
