Pick #1: Pittsburgh Panthers Over Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have not had a losing season since 2003. If you ask most experts today, they’ll tell you that streak is about to be broken. Pittsburgh was extremely fortunate to finish 9-7-1 last season, and their playoff appearance overshadowed the fact that they weren’t particularly good.

Ben Roethlisberger is gone, but how much of an upgrade will rookie Kenny Pickett or Mitch Trubisky actually be? This team ranked 25th per DVOA on offense last season, and its offensive line profiles to be one of the worst in the league.

Another sneaky reason to be pessimistic about Mike Tomlin and Co. is their overrated defense. TJ Watt is fantastic, but even with him they finished 20th in scoring defense and 24th in yards allowed in 2021. The cherry on top: Pittsburgh projects to have the fourth toughest schedule in the NFL.

As for the Pitt Panthers, they’ll begin the season as a top-15 ranked team after an 11-win season last year. Sure Pickett has moved on to the Steelers, but the foundation of this program is still there. All five offensive line starters are back, and three-year starter Kedon Slovis transferred into the program from USC to replace Pickett.

They have a nasty defensive line and will play just the 54th toughest schedule per ESPN’s FPI. They’re projected CFP win total sits at 8.5, and they likely won’t even need to eclipse that to win this bet.

Pick: Pittsburgh Panthers (-155)

Pick #2: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Over Alabama Crimson Tide

Tom Brady and the Bucs won 13 games last season despite significant offensive line and wide receiver injuries. Now, Brady will reportedly have a bigger input on play calling and strategy with Byron Leftwich, on a team that was number one in offensive rating per DVOA.

Gronk may be gone, but Russell Gage will join Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to form one of the best three-receiver sets in the NFL.

Tampa Bay’s defensive unit also earned a top-nine grade per DVOA in 2021, and boast arguably the best secondary. Also working in the Bucs’ favor is the fact that they’ll play the league’s seventh easiest schedule. The NFC South talent drops off a cliff after them, and a complete division sweep is well within the range of outcomes.

Alabama meanwhile, returns Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young and will bring in another loaded recruiting class. They’ve won all 12 regular season games in two of the past four years, but here’s the thing: Even if the Crimson Tide go 12-0 they can still lose this bet.

A perfect season for Bama is anything but a lock, as they’ll face five top-25 opponents and the seventh toughest schedule in College Football..
