Marseille vs Sporting Lisbon Prediction
Marseille’s start to the new Ligue 1 season could hardly have been better and they remain unbeaten. Seven wins and two draws in Ligue 1 have taken them to second, just two points behind PSG, but in the UCL they are point-less and goal-less.

After experiencing a difficult last few seasons both on and off the pitch, the team from the South of France has started to emerge as contenders once again, but their lack of experience in top-level European soccer over that time has made the step up from Ligue 1 to the UCL a big one.
Olympique in Need of First Win
Another cause for concern for Marseille ahead of this game is their poor record against Portuguese opposition, against whom they have lost six of their last eight. The last time they beat a team from the Primeira Liga was back in the 1989-90 season when they beat Benfica in what was then known as the European Cup.

The last time Olympique made it into the knockout stages of the UCL was 2011-12 and if they are to repeat that feat they need to get a win on the board as soon as possible. They will be relying on a noisy and boisterous Vélodrome to help them get that win on Tuesday and they warmed up nicely with a 3-0 win over Anger last Friday.

Slow Primeira Liga Start for Sporting
Sporting’s domestic season has yet to ignite. Despite finishing second in last season’s Primeira Liga, which earned them their place in this season’s Champions League, their Primeira Liga campaign has been a slow burner. They are currently down in seventh with a 4-1-3 record, but they did win on Friday night – a 3-1 victory over Gil Vicente – and their UCL record is perfect with two wins from two.
After making it out of the group stages in 2021-22, Ruben Amorim’s men will be looking to do the same again this season. They appear to have learned lessons from last season when they lost their first two and had to rely on some heroics in games three to six to make it through.

Sporting in Control of Group D
This time around, Sporting’s two wins – Eintracht Frankfurt (3-0) and Tottenham (2-0) – have put them in control of the group and in control of their own destiny. Their away form has been excellent so far this season too and they will be unfazed by the intimidating atmosphere in Marseille.
They have not faced French opposition since their Europa League campaign of 2010-11 when they beat Lille in both games – 2-1 in France and 1-0 in Portugal.

Marseille vs Sporting Lisbon Pick
Despite having a 0-0-2 record, Marseille kick off here as favorites – partly due to home advantage and the red hot atmosphere that will be created by the home fans – but Sporting are 2-0-0 for a reason.
For me, given Sporting’s outstanding start to the campaign, the value here is definitely with the away win.
Pick: Sporting Lisbon to win (+225)
