Benfica faces an uphill battle in order to progress in Europe’s most prized competition as they travel to the San Siro to lock horns with Inter Milan on Wednesday. The kick-off for this Champions League Quarterfinals second leg is scheduled for 3 PM ET and we have your Inter Milan vs Benfica prediction here.
Inter grabbed a massive 2-0 victory in Portugal last week, giving them a notable advantage when it comes to going on to the semifinals. However, they’re fresh off a shock defeat in league action over the weekend, but we’ll get into that more below.

Inter Milan vs Benfica Preview
The Nerazzurri are on the verge of their first semifinal since the 2009-2010 campaign, where Inter actually ended up winning the Champions League, beating Bayern Munich in the grand finale.
While Simone Inzaghi’s men have struggled to find success in Serie A this term, they certainly have a legitimate chance to get their hands on another UCL trophy. Nico Barella and Romelu Lukaku were on target in last week’s win at Benfica, with Barella heading home before his Belgian teammate scored from the spot to seal the deal.

That being said, Inter just lost 1-0 on Saturday to AC Monza Brianz, a team 13 points behind them in the table. In fact, they’ve failed to win in six games in Italy. Not exactly a good sign, but Inzaghi’s group only needs a draw here to move on. Even a slim defeat would do.
Benfica couldn’t be in worse form for such an important fixture. The Eagles have lost three consecutive outings in Portugal, now just holding a four-point lead at the top. Their attack has also scored only once in the previous three games across competitions.

The quarterfinals have unfortunately been Benfica’s kryptonite, failing to ever move on to the last four. They also lost at this stage in 2021-22 to Premier League giants Liverpool. On a more positive note, Roger Schmidt’s squad has already won in Italy in this year’s competition, beating Juventus in the group stages. It will take a lopsided victory to eliminate Inter on Wednesday.
Inter Milan vs Benfica History
Prior to leg one in this year’s tournament, these teams had only met on three other occasions in the Inter Milan vs Benfica history. Two of those matches ended 0-0, and one ended in a 4-3 Inter Milan win. These matches all came long ago though back in 2008 and 2004.
Inter Milan vs Benfica Projected Lineups & Injuries
Inter Projected Lineup: Onana; Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Mkhitaryan, Brozovic, Dimarco; Dzeko, Martinez
Injuries & absences: Skriniar, de Vrij
Benfica Projected Lineup: Vlachodimos; Gilberto, A. Silva, Otamendi, Grimaldo; Florentino, Aursnes; Neres, R. Silva, Mario; Ramos

Inter is missing a pair of key players in Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij. Lukaku will likely come on as a substitute again, looking for his 10th UCL goal in an Inter shirt. For Benfica, veteran center-back Nicolas Otamendi returns after serving a ban in the opening leg.
