One week after we hit on Rickie Fowler winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the PGA Tour heads to Silvis, Illinois for the John Deere Classic. Cameron Young is the lone top-25 golfer in the world teeing it up, and he’s looking to shake off the rust in his play of late.

Despite this tournament not boasting a stellar field, it always provides plenty of fireworks for a birdie fest. Since 2008, the winning score has been at least 18-under-par. Five of the last nine champions have also made the John Deere Classic their maiden victory on the PGA Tour.

2023 John Deere Classic Odds

Last year, J.T. Poston went wire-to-wire in Silvis to claim his second career PGA Tour title. The favorite is Denny McCarthy at +1400. He recently dropped a playoff at the Memorial Tournament, then followed that up with a top-20 at the U.S. Open and a top-10 at the Travelers Championship. Cameron Young, who doesn’t have a top-10 since the Masters in April, and Russell Henley are the second favorites to lift the trophy at +1600.

Ludvig Aberg Showing Well Early In Career

It hasn’t taken long for former world #1 amateur Ludvig Aberg to play some fantastic golf as a professional. Since making his pro debut at the RBC Canadian Open, he posted back-to-back top-25’s, then was one stroke off the lead at the halfway point of last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

In his last twelve rounds, the impressive Swede is first in strokes gained: off-the-tee and eighth tee-to-green. With this tournament showcasing some breakthrough titles in the past (Bryson DeChambeau 2017, Michael Kim 2018, Dylan Frittelli 2019), he’d be a solid choice at +2200 to pick off his first title against a diluted field.

2023 John Deere Classic Picks and Value Bets

1. Eric Cole (+2800): Eric Cole nearly won for the first time earlier in the campaign, losing in a playoff at the Honda Classic. He’s continued his strong play, making seven of his last nine cuts. On three occasions, he was inside the top-15. In the last twelve times teeing it up, he’s second in strokes gained: putting, and fourth in total strokes gained. Cole is seventh (of those competing) in birdie average on the season.
2. Alex Smalley (+4000): Just two starts ago, Alex Smalley had a tidy tournament, winding up T-9th at the Travelers Championship. That week, he gained over nine shots to the field tee-to-green. In the last twelve rounds, he’s tops in ball striking and eighth in total strokes gained. Last year he was T-16th at the John Deere Classic.
3. Doug Ghim (+6000): Doug Ghim has found himself on the periphery of contention in his last five events, all of which he’s made the cut. His worst finish in that span was T-33rd, where he posted three top-20’s. In the last twelve rounds, he’s second in SG: tee-to-green and sixth in total strokes gained. He’ll be an interesting name in the top 10/20 markets.
