NHL Hart Trophy Trends to Consider
- This is a forward’s award. Skaters up front have won 83 of the 102 Harts handed out (81.4%). Goalies have taken it just nine times (8.8%), Hellebuyck the latest in 2025, and defensemen only 10 (9.8%). McDavid, MacKinnon and Kucherov are all forwards.
- The scoring race tracks the MVP. 40 of 102 Hart winners (39.2%) also won the Art Ross as the NHL’s leading scorer. McDavid pulled that double in 2023; in 2026 he led the league in points but Kucherov took the Hart on a league-best points-per-game.
- The Cup and the Hart rarely land together. Just 16 MVPs (15.7%) won it all the same season, and none since Martin St. Louis with Tampa Bay in 2003-04.
- You have to make the playoffs. No Hart winner has missed the postseason since Mario Lemieux in 1988, one of only four times it has ever happened.
- Repeat MVPs are rare. Back-to-back Harts haven’t happened since Alex Ovechkin in 2008 and 2009, a trend working against Kucherov’s title defense.

Nikita Kucherov captured his second Hart Trophy in 2026 (2019, 2026), edging McDavid in the closest MVP vote since 2001-02. He finished second in the NHL with 130 points but led the league in points per game, powering a Lightning team that also produced Vezina winner Andrei Vasilevskiy and Jack Adams winner Jon Cooper.
McDavid shares the active lead with Alex Ovechkin at three Hart Trophies and is chasing his fourth. MacKinnon, the 2024 winner, and Kucherov both loom as repeat threats at the top of the market.
