Monday Night Football takes on a whole new meaning when Bill Belichick strolls onto the field in Chapel Hill. The six-time Super Bowl champion makes his college coaching debut as his North Carolina Tar Heels host the TCU Horned Frogs in the Week 1 finale.
The college football odds have shifted dramatically since hitting the board. What started as UNC -2.5 has swung all the way to TCU -3.5, with sharp money backing the Horned Frogs.
Kickoff is set for Monday at 8:00 pm ET from Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The game gets the prime-time treatment on national television.
TCU vs North Carolina Betting Line
TCU enters as 3.5-point road favorites, with the moneyline at -165. North Carolina sits at +140 to pull the upset. The total has dropped from 59.5 to 56 points.
The Horned Frigs went 9-4 in the Big 12 conference last season, while the Tar Heels went a disappointing 6-7 in the ACC. Both teams enter as huge longshots in the National Championship odds.

TCU vs North Carolina Line Movement
This line has been all over the map. The Tar Heels opened as 2.5-point favorites in April, but sharp action flipped the game completely, with TCU taking 81% of the money on just 39% of spread bets.
The total tells an interesting story too. After opening at 59.5, the under has been hammered down to 56.
TCU Football Team Preview
Sonny Dykes enters Year 4 with momentum after winning his final four games last season. Josh Hoover returns at quarterback following a 3,900-yard, 27-touchdown campaign.
Hoover excels attacking the middle of the field, leading Power Four quarterbacks with 166 attempts down the middle. His 91.5 passing grade (via PFF) in that area ranked fifth nationally. The problem comes against man coverage, where he threw 10 of his 18 turnover-worthy plays.
TCU Key Metrics 2024
TCU’s ground game remains a massive concern. The Horned Frogs averaged just 112.8 rushing yards per game, with running backs Trent Battle and Jeremy Payne combining for under 500 yards total.
The defense returns eight starters, led by safety Bud Clark who posted the nation’s best coverage grade at 90.1. But recent history shows TCU stumbling early, going just 1-5 ATS to open last season.
North Carolina Football Team Preview
Belichick inherits a roster he completely overhauled with 41 transfers. The Tar Heels return just four offensive starters, including quarterback competition between South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez and Max Johnson.
Lopez brings experience after throwing for 2,500 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. But he struggled under pressure, completing just 34.6% of his passes when rushed. That’s concerning against a TCU defense that finished with the fifth-best coverage grade in college football.
UNC Key Players 2024
Steve Belichick joins his father as defensive coordinator after leading Washington’s defense last season. The younger Belichick brings college experience and a 4-2-5 scheme loaded with nine potential transfer starters.
The biggest question mark is chemistry. Can 41 new players gel immediately under a coach who’s never worked at this level? Kenan Stadium should be rocking for this one, giving the Tar Heels an emotional boost.

North Carolina might be college football’s biggest mystery in 2025. But if there’s one thing Belichick knows, it’s defense. He’s won championships by prioritizing that side of the ball throughout his career.
The Tar Heels will throw defensive looks at TCU that college offenses rarely see. Steve Belichick’s Washington defense was among the stingiest in the country last season, and that experience should translate immediately.
TCU must replace five of their top six pass catchers. Asking Hoover to immediately click with new weapons against exotic schemes is a tall order, especially on the road in a hostile environment.
North Carolina opened last season, grinding out a 19-17 win at Minnesota. While the coaching staff has changed, expect Belichick to establish a similar defensive identity from day one.
Both secondaries project as elite units that should limit explosive plays. With neither team able to establish a consistent ground game, points will come at a premium Monday night. The defenses are simply ahead of the offenses in this matchup.
