Two teams on the opposite end of the Conference USA spectrum collide when the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (4-3, 3-0 C-USA) visit the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (1-6, 0-3 C-USA).
The Gamecocks, looking for their third win in a row, are comfortable road favorites in the college football odds, against the 1-win Blue Raiders.
Action gets underway Wednesday at 7:30pm ET from Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium Murfreesboro, TN. ESPN2 will carry the broadcast.
Check out my Jacksonville State vs Middle Tennessee prediction, along with player prop picks and the closing line.
Jacksonville State vs Middle Tennessee Prediction
After a 1-2 start to the year, Jacksonville State has since righted the ship, reeling off wins in three of the last four, including their last win, a 38-25 beatdown of Delaware.
The Gamecocks are Conference USA’s highest scoring team, posting 30.7 points per game, the only school in the league at the 30-point plateau.
Their bread-and-butter is a dominant rush attack, tops in the C-USA, averaging 276.1 yards per contest. The 5.6 yards per carry and 21 rushing scores are also head and shoulders above everyone else.
But could the Gamecocks be a little too run oriented? They are also last in the conference in passing yards, putting up a mere 140.1 yards per contest and tied for the fewest passing TDs, at four.
Perhaps that might matter Wednesday, as about the only thing Middle Tennessee can do well is stop the run, allowing 142.9 yards per game, good for third-best in the conference.
The Blue Raiders are the second-lowest scoring team in C-USA, putting up just 18.6 points per game, while allowing 29.7 points per game (10th). Their inability to generate enough offense has cost them dearly.
Middle Tennessee just lost to Delaware by a field goal 31-28, a week after falling 22-20 to Missouri State. That’s their third straight loss by one score, as they were dumped by Kennesaw State 24-16.
MTSU does offer a Top-5 passing game in the league, so they might be able to move the ball against the Gamecocks’ pass defense, which ranks middle of the pack.
Still Jacksonville State has routed the Blue Raiders in each of the last two seasons, hanging 40+ on them both times and winning by double digits each game.
Given what I outlined in my Wednesday college football prediction above, taking the Gamecocks to cover the 6-point spread is my best bet for Oct. 29.

Jacksonville State QB Caden Creel has really taken to the run game since being inserted as the starter midway through the second quarter of their game against Southern Mississippi.
Over those three games, he’s rushed for over 130 yards twice, and last went for 57 yards on the ground in the win over Delaware.
But he’s currently nursing an elbow injury suffered last game against Delaware. Even if it’s on his non-throwing arm, I expect the coaching staff to let the running backs do most of the heavy lifting, especially since they have a stud back in Cam Cook.
MTSU also has a good run defense, which should neutralize some of Creel’s effectiveness, and keep him off the 90-yard rush level.
I know the Gamecoks don’t pass much, but when they do, receiver Brock Rechsteiner is the usually the one they go to.
The senior has picked up a TD catch in four straight games, and he’s up against an MTSU defense that has allowed the most TD catches in C-USA thus year with 18.
We’ll wrap with Blue Raiders QB Nicholas Vattiato, who has a gettable 1.5 TD toss line Wednesday. It’s a number he’s topped in three of his last four outings. Jacksonville State has surrendered 11 TD passes against this season.
