NHL Frozen Frenzy Pick: Columbus vs Buffalo (Under 6.5)

The Blue Jackets rank 28th in the NHL in goals scored. The offense has been feast-or-famine, and I think tonight it runs dry. No one for the Blue Jackets has more than nine points. Dmitri Voronkov had two goals in the Blue Jackets’ win Saturday.

Buffalo started the season terribly, but has won four of its last six games. Red Wings (and Flyers) castoff Alex Lyon has solidified the goalie spot with a 2.61 GAA so far for the Sabres. Last season, these two teams played three times and only went over 6.5 goals once.

NHL Frozen Frenzy Pick: Anaheim vs Florida (Panthers -1.5)

The defending Stanley Cup champs haven’t been amazing to start the season. That’s what happens when you lose your best overall player, Aleksander Barkov, to a knee injury for the season. Brad Marchand is still going strong with a team-high 11 points, but Sam Bennett has only two points so far this season.

This is Anaheim’s last game on a five-game road trip. Ducks 21-year-old forward Leo Carlsson has nine points in his first eight games after scoring 45 last season. It looks like he’s about to break out.

But I see a tired Ducks team ready to go home. Give me Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky to have a big game and shut down the Ducks.

NHL Frozen Frenzy Pick: Utah vs. Edmonton (Oilers -1.5)

The Mammoth are a great story. The former Arizona Coyotes and Utah Hockey Club have been rebranded and are on a franchise-record seven-game win streak (the, uh, Coyotes were never very good). Mammoth center Nick Schmaltz has seven goals already, and has never had more than 25 in a season

But look closely at the Utah streak, and it’s come against five losing teams. Edmonton doesn’t have a winning record, 4-4-1, but we know they’re gonna be fine. Leon Draisaitl has scored at least one goal in six of the Oilers’ last seven home games. Edmonton also swept Utah in all three games last season. Utah gets its wake-up call tonight.

NHL Frozen Frenzy Pick: Kevin Fiala Anytime Goal Scorer (+135)

I’m going to close with Kings winger Kevin Fiala to score tonight against San Jose. Fiala had a career-high 35 goals last season and had the game-winner for the Kings Saturday night. He’s always good for a handful of shots each game.

San Jose is the only NHL team without a win in regulation. They’ve lost 19 in a row against Pacific Division teams and are allowing a league-worst 4.67 goals a game. All signs point to plenty of goals for LA tonight, and Fiala is a great pick to get one.
