  • David Benavidez is a -900 favorite to defend his WBC light heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde on Saturday
  • Yarde is taking his third shot at a world title after losses to Kovalev and Beterbiev

One of the biggest fights on the Saudi boxing calendar takes place Saturday night as David Benavidez (30-0) defends his WBC light heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde (27-3) in Riyadh.

The British challenger is hoping third time’s the charm after coming up short against Sergey Kovalev and Artur Beterbiev, but the books don’t give him much chance. They’ve installed Benavidez as a massive -900 favorite, and I predict “El Monstro” will use pressure and body work to break Yarde down late.

The fight takes place at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with DAZN PPV handling the broadcast duties starting at 3 PM ET for the undercard.

The matchup favors Benavidez in almost every way. He’s had exactly two fights at light heavyweight, beating former champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk and undefeated David Morrell to capture the WBC belt. Yarde, meanwhile, has a troubling pattern of fading late in big fights, and I doubt he can handle 12 rounds of Benavidez’s pressure.

Make no mistake, there are reasons to respect Yarde. He has real power, good size for the division, and even gave Beterbiev trouble early on. He’s knocked out 24 of his 30 opponents, including quick wins over Jorge Silva and Marko Nikolic during his recent comeback.

However, his October fight against Ralfs Vilcans raised some red flags. He was able to drop Vilcans early and got the stoppage, but the fight turned competitive in stretches. Another fighter knocked Vilcans out in one round shortly after, which doesn’t say much for Yarde’s finishing ability at this level.

That’s a real problem against Benavidez. The Mexican throws combinations from angles you don’t see coming, mixing body shots with head hunting in ways that drain opponents. Gvozdyk had only been stopped by Beterbiev before facing Benavidez, and Morrell was unbeaten. Neither are easy outs, yet Benavidez handled both without much trouble.

Yarde’s pattern is pretty clear at this point. He comes out hot, looks good early, then hits a wall once the top guys turn up the heat. It happened against Kovalev in round 11, then happened against Beterbiev in round 8. With a body puncher like Benavidez, the gank tank issue could prove costly.

Neither guy really comes out swinging from the opening bell, which actually hurts Yarde. Benavidez is happy to take his time, figure you out, and then start breaking you down. Once he’s got the timing, Yarde’s going to start walking into those big shots. My prediction is Benavidez gets the stoppage between rounds 7-9, as that’s typically when Yarde starts to fade.

Benavidez is 28 and hitting his prime, looking to make a statement. He wants the Bivol vs. Beterbiev winner for all the belts. If he finishes strong against Yarde, he’s right in the mix for that massive fight in 2026.

Benavidez vs Yarde Tale of the Tape

This fight features an undefeated champion in his prime taking on a two-time title challenger hungry for one more shot at the top. If Yarde manages the upset at 34 years old, it would go down as one of the most impressive British wins abroad in recent memory.

Benavidez has all the physical tools you want. With a three-inch height and 2.5-inch reach advantage, he can pick his spots, land combinations, and keep himself out of Yarde’s danger zone when he needs to.
