Monday evening the #2 seeded Michigan Wolverines attempt to upset the #1 seeded Texas Longhorns in women’s March Madness Elite 8 action. In doing so, Michigan would reach their first Final 4 ever. Their adversaries reached the Final Four just last year, before bowing out to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

I’m very bullish on the Longhorns continuing to dismantle their opposition in this tournament. They’ve won their first three contests running away by an average of 35.3 points, taking the first two by an exact margin of 42 points. They’re the by far more battle tested team, having made the Elite 8 in three consecutive seasons, while Michigan has made it for the first time in four years (and have never made a Final 4).
AP All-America junior forward Madison Booker has lived up to the billing, bringing down at least eight boards in all three duels. She exploded for a ridiculous 40 points on 14-for-21 shooting in the second round vs Oregon, then followed that up with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists in the Sweet 16 against Kentucky.
This season, Texas is a phenomenal 16-3 versus top-25 squads, compared to the Wolverines, who were just 6-5 in that same scenario in the regular season. This also amounts to a de facto home game for the Longhorns, as it’s being played in state. Texas has been solid on both sides of the floor, and the Wolverines have been very effective offensively. However, their defense is leaky, ranking 132nd on the campaign in points allowed.
Michigan could use something of ‘bulletin board’ material to get extra amped for this Elite 8 affair – Texas’ tradition is to place the nameplate where they’ve advanced in the March Madness bracket, but they put in on the line that would show they advanced to the Final 4. The Longhorns claim that was a mistake, and it likely was, but surely Michigan head coach Kim Barnes Arico will use that to fuel her unit.
The Wolverines have a solid committee of talented players, like Olivia Olson (19.3 PPG in three games), Syla Swords (18.3 PPG in tournament), and senior guard Brooke Quarles Daniels has brought down 21 boards.
This is just the second all-time meeting between these two schools, after Texas won 69-52 in 2018, so there’s no recent historical H2H data to go off of. Experience matters in such a big spot, and I believe Texas will terrorize Michigan offensively, exposing a weakness for the Wolverines.
Wolverines vs Longhorns H2H Team Stats
Texas is better than Michigan in every statistical category, ranking inside the top-10 for PPG and top-15 in points allowed per outing. The Wolverines score at a reasonable clip, but are severely hampered on D (132nd), which could see their adversaries run up the score on Monday.
