  • The Lightning opened as heavy series favorites over the Canadiens for their Round 1 matchup
  • Both Atlantic Division rivals enter the playoffs with 106 points in the standings
  • Check out my early Lightning vs Canadiens prediction, opening Round 1 odds and spread analysis below

Two of the Atlantic Division’s top teams will square off in what should be one of the most compelling First Round series in the East. The Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning finished the regular season dead even in points, setting up a matchup of Montreal’s young core against Tampa’s battle-tested championship group.

FanDuel has already released opening series odds, and the book isn’t buying the Habs as a real threat. For a look at all the first-round matchups, check out our NHL playoff bracket.

Below is my breakdown of the opening Lightning vs Canadiens odds, the series spread and my early lean for Round 1.

Lightning vs Canadiens Round 1 Odds

Bet TypeLightningCanadiens
Moneyline-310+245
Series Spread-1.5 (-128)+1.5 (+100)

Tampa’s -310 moneyline translates to a 75.6% implied probability to advance, making the Lightning one of the biggest Round 1 favorites on the board. The series spread is where things get interesting, with Montreal +1.5 at even money giving you the Habs to either win outright or push Tampa to a Game 7.

Why Tampa Is Favored in the Lightning vs Canadiens Series

It starts with Nikita Kucherov. The Lightning winger put up a ridiculous 130 points (44 goals, 86 assists) in 75 games this season, and he’s the kind of player who can decide a series by himself. Kucherov has been doing it in the playoffs for nearly a decade, and he remains the single most dangerous weapon in this entire matchup.

Behind Kucherov, Tampa’s supporting cast is stacked. Jake Guentzel (88 pts), Brandon Hagel (74) and defenseman Darren Raddysh (70) give the Lightning multiple ways to beat you, and Brayden Point is still around as a secondary center option with 50 points in just 63 games.

Then there’s Andrei Vasilevskiy. The Russian netminder posted a 2.31 GAA and .912 save percentage across 58 games this year, and he’s a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the kind of playoff résumé that matters this time of year. He’s the biggest single-player advantage Tampa has in this series.

Montreal’s Path in the Lightning vs Canadiens Matchup

The Habs aren’t a cupcake. Cole Caufield just potted 51 goals, Nick Suzuki put up 101 points, and rookie defenseman Lane Hutson piled up 78 points (12 goals, 66 assists) in his sophomore season. Add in Juraj Slafkovsky (73 pts) and Ivan Demidov (62 pts) and Montreal has legit high-end skill up and down the lineup.

Montreal also has the better power play at 23.4% vs Tampa’s 21.0%, which is critical given the Lightning’s 82.7% penalty kill will be a huge test. If Caufield and Suzuki can get hot on the man advantage, that’s the clearest path to a competitive series.

The Habs also enter the series hot, winning both of their last two head-to-head meetings with Tampa, including a 4-1 blowout in Tampa on March 31. That’s meaningful momentum heading into a playoff rematch.

The wild card is Jakub Dobes. The Czech rookie went 29-8-4 with a 2.69 GAA and .904 save percentage in 41 games, earning the starting job. He’s never played a playoff game, but if he’s up to the moment, Montreal can absolutely make this a series.

Early Lightning vs Canadiens Prediction

  • Canadiens +1.5 (+100)

I’m not laying -310 on Tampa, and I’m not talking myself into the Habs pulling an outright upset at +245 either. That’s why the series spread is where my Lightning vs Canadiens prediction lives. Give me Montreal +1.5 at even money.

Think about what this bet actually needs: Montreal either wins the series outright or pushes Tampa to a Game 7. If the Habs lose 4-3, you still cash. The only way this ticket loses is if the Lightning win in six games or fewer.

The market is flat out undervaluing Montreal. This is a 106-point team with Suzuki, Caufield, Hutson and company, and they just beat Tampa twice in a row heading into the playoffs. The idea that this is a gimme for the Lightning doesn’t match what I’ve seen lately.

If you want even more cushion, FanDuel has Montreal +2.5 at -235 as an alternate. That bet only needs the Habs to avoid a sweep. You’re laying juice, but it’s a cleaner cash if you don’t want to sweat a Game 7. For me, +1.5 at even money is the sweet spot.
