Philadelphia’s Cinderella run just got a lot harder. The Flyers punched their ticket to Round 2 with a gutsy 1-0 overtime win in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, but now they walk into a well-rested Carolina Hurricanes team that hasn’t played since April 25.

The Hurricanes swept Ottawa in four games and have been sitting, scheming and waiting ever since. DraftKings has Carolina as a -275 series favorite.

This is the first-ever playoff meeting between these two franchises. As the full second-round picture unfolds, check out our NHL playoff bracket.

Why Carolina Is Favored in Flyers vs Hurricanes Odds

Frederik Andersen has been unreal. The veteran netminder posted a 1.10 GAA and .955 save percentage in the Ottawa sweep, including a shutout. Those are historic-level playoff numbers, and he’s the primary reason Carolina’s defense was so suffocating in Round 1.

The Canes allowed just 1.25 goals per game and killed penalties at a 95.2% clip. That kind of structure under Rod Brind’Amour is a nightmare for a Flyers offense that managed just 2.93 goals per game in the regular season.

Carolina also won the regular season series 3-0-1, but three of those four meetings went past regulation. The Flyers hung tough in every game and were a bounce or two away from splitting the series. Taylor Hall led the Canes with 7 points in the Ottawa sweep, while Logan Stankoven scored in all four games

The regular season dominance goes beyond this year, too. Carolina is 33-10-6 against Philadelphia since 2013-14 and has gone undefeated in regulation against the Flyers in five of the last six seasons.

Flyers’ Path in the Flyers vs Hurricanes Series

Dan Vladar. That’s the path. The Flyers’ netminder just posted a 42-save shutout to close out Pittsburgh, and he’s been rock solid all postseason with a 2.03 GAA and .914 save percentage. If he can match Andersen save for save, Philly has a real chance.

The Flyers’ offense has been spread across the entire lineup, with nine players posting 3 or more points against Pittsburgh. Konecny, Zegras and Ristolainen led the way, while rookie Porter Martone chipped in with 2 goals. That depth scoring matters against a team that eliminates top-line threats.

The concern is that Michkov (2 pts in R1) and Tippett (2 pts) have been quiet. Those two combined for 48 goals in the regular season and need to show up against a much tougher opponent.

Rest is the other factor working against Philly. Carolina has been off since April 25 while the Flyers just went six games with an overtime clincher. But the flip side is that the Canes haven’t faced any adversity yet. They never trailed in a single game during the sweep. Philly has been in every situation imaginable and came out the other side.

Flyers vs Hurricanes Prediction

I’m taking Carolina to advance. Andersen’s playoff numbers are absurd, the rest advantage is real, and Carolina has owned this matchup for over a decade. Brind’Amour’s system is built for this kind of matchup, where a deep, disciplined team suffocates a scrappy opponent that relies on spread scoring and goaltending.

Vladar has been phenomenal, but asking him to outplay a goalie posting a .955 save percentage over a full series is a tall order. Philly’s run has been fun, but the Hurricanes are a different tier than Pittsburgh. I’ll lay the -275 and also take Carolina in five when that price drops.
