The Norris goes to the NHL’s best all-around defenseman, and the race tends to swing on offense. A blueliner who starts piling up points can rocket up the board in a matter of weeks, favorites get run down, and the voting doesn’t always match where the betting market closed.

This page is the record. Each season we have on file is below, with the chart showing how the market moved, a recap of how the winner got there, dated movement notes, and the closing odds.

2023 Norris Trophy Odds

Sports Betting Dime

Erik Karlsson turned back the clock. The Sharks veteran put up a defenseman’s season the league hadn’t seen in three decades, becoming the first blueliner since Brian Leetch in 1991-92 to crack 100 points.

He ran away with the 2023 Norris as the NHL’s best defenseman, shortening to -450 by the end of the regular season. The only real question by the spring was the size of the number next to his name.

Below is how Karlsson pulled clear of the field.

2023 Closing Norris Trophy Odds

Player Odds
Erik Karlsson (Sharks) -450
Dougie Hamilton (Devils) +900
Adam Fox (Rangers) +1000

  • [July 18] Cale Makar opened as the repeat favorite to win the 2023 Norris. Runner-up Roman Josi was listed second at +600, with 2022 Calder winner Moritz Seider at +2500.

2022 Norris Trophy Odds

Sports Betting Dime

One of the closest Norris races in recent memory. Colorado’s Cale Makar edged Nashville captain Roman Josi for his first Norris Trophy, with Josi storming back late to make the voters sweat.

Makar was the favorite from the jump, but Josi’s monster March — points in 13 of 14 games — dragged his odds from +1750 all the way to +240. It wasn’t quite enough to catch the young Avalanche star.

Here’s how the 2022 Norris odds moved across the season.

2022 Closing Norris Trophy Odds

Player Odds
Cale Makar (Avalanche) -225
Roman Josi (Predators) +200
Victor Hedman (Lightning) +1100
Adam Fox (Rangers) +5000
John Carlson (Capitals) +8000
Devon Toews (Avalanche) +8000
Aaron Ekblad (Panthers) +10000
Miro Heiskanen (Stars) +10000
Charlie McAvoy (Bruins) +10000
Quinn Hughes (Canucks) +15000
Seth Jones (Blackhawks) +15000
Kris Letang (Penguins) +15000
Morgan Rielly (Maple Leafs) +15000

MacKenzie Weegar (Panthers) +20000

Odds as of April 5 at Barstool Sportsbook.

How the 2022 Norris race developed:

  • [April 5] Makar was still the favorite, but Josi closed the gap considerably, moving from +1750 to +240 after recording points in 13 of 14 games in March.
  • [March 10] Makar was a resounding favorite for the league’s top defenseman, listed at -286.
  • [February 7] Makar’s odds kept improving. Hedman became the second betting favorite, ahead of defending winner Adam Fox.
  • [January 13] Makar’s play had him all over the highlight reels, and his Norris odds reflected it. He was the favorite at just under 2-1.
  • [December 21] Adam Fox and Makar were co-favorites at +425. Makar had 26 points in 23 games, Fox 31 in 30.
  • [December 2] Aaron Ekblad kept climbing as his offense picked up, leading all defensemen in points, though Makar stayed the favorite with 21 points in 23 games.
  • [October 22] Some of the week’s biggest jumps were Jared Spurgeon (+2450 to +2000) and Aaron Ekblad (+1750 to +1550).
  • [October 4] Makar’s odds improved to +350 before the season even started, making him an even bigger favorite.

2021 Norris Trophy Odds

Sports Betting Dime

Adam Fox wasn’t even on the board. The Rangers defenseman didn’t appear in the opening odds at all, then turned a breakout sophomore season into a Norris Trophy nobody saw coming.

Roman Josi and Victor Hedman split favorite status for much of the year, but Fox kept climbing, going from a +3150 afterthought in late December to a finalist and, ultimately, the winner.

Below is how the 2021 Norris race unfolded.

2021 Closing Norris Trophy Odds

Player Odds
Victor Hedman (Lightning) -150
Adam Fox (Rangers) +340
Cale Makar (Avalanche) +550
Charlie McAvoy (Bruins) +650
Jeff Petry (Canadiens) +750
Drew Doughty (Kings) +1100
John Carlson (Capitals) +1100
Shea Theodore (Golden Knights) +1500
Darnell Nurse (Oilers) +1500
Ryan Pulock (Islanders) +1500
Samuel Girard (Avalanche) +3400
Alex Pietrangelo (Golden Knights) +3400
Tyson Barrie (Oilers) +4800

Odds as of April 8 at FanDuel Sportsbook.

How the 2021 Norris odds moved:

  • [June 30] Adam Fox won the 2021 Norris. He wasn’t listed in the November opening odds, then became available at +3150 at the end of December.
  • [June 9] Victor Hedman, Adam Fox, and Cale Makar were named the three finalists. With no new odds posted since mid-April, Hedman remained the betting favorite.
  • [April 8] Fox became the second betting favorite at +570, riding five goals and 35 assists in 36 games at age 22.
  • [April 1] Hedman emerged as the odds-on favorite as the Lightning rolled, shortening from +150 to -170. Aaron Ekblad was making a late push before a season-ending leg injury.

  • [February 23] Cale Makar became the new favorite, dropping from +600 to +200.
  • [February 1] Shea Theodore emerged as a betting favorite with seven points (3 G, 4 A) through seven games, shortening from +2200 to +925.
  • [December 30] Victor Hedman became the favorite at +500, with Roman Josi close behind at +550.
  • [November 16] Roman Josi opened as a +500 favorite, with Washington’s John Carlson also listed at +500.

2020 Norris Trophy Odds

Sports Betting Dime

The favorite didn’t win this one. John Carlson dominated the 2020 Norris market wire to wire, sitting as short as -600 after a monster first half, but it was Roman Josi who skated off with the hardware.

Josi posted 16 goals and 45 assists for his first Norris. Carlson, who led all defensemen in scoring with 75 points (15 goals, 60 assists), finished second in the voting despite being the runaway betting favorite.

Here’s how the 2020 Norris odds played out.

2020 Closing Norris Trophy Odds

Player Odds
John Carlson (Capitals) -600
Roman Josi (Predators) +500
Victor Hedman (Lightning) +600
Alex Pietrangelo (Blues) +2000

Final 2020 Norris Trophy odds. Josi won despite Carlson closing as the heavy favorite.

The shifts that defined the 2020 Norris race:

  • [Sept. 21] Roman Josi won the 2020 Norris, capturing his first.
  • [March 2] Carlson kept dominating the race, still 13 points ahead of Josi among defensemen in scoring.
  • [February 3] Carlson held an 11-point lead in defenseman scoring and a huge edge in the odds at -450.
  • [January 3] Carlson led all defensemen with 50 points, nine more than Josi, and remained a prohibitively short favorite.
  • [December 9] With more than half a season to play, Carlson was already -500, an 83.33% implied probability.
  • [November 4] Washington’s John Carlson became the new favorite at +330. His 23 points were seven more than any other defenseman.
  • [October 11] Morgan Rielly and Seth Jones shot up to +1100, while Erik Karlsson fell from +600 to +900 during San Jose’s slow start.
  • [October 1] Columbus’ Seth Jones took the biggest leap, going from +2000 to +1600.
  • [September 23] Nashville’s Roman Josi (+2500 to +1800) improved the most since lines were first posted.
  • [September 16] In a rare twist, the two early favorites played for the same team: San Jose’s Brent Burns (+450) and Erik Karlsson (+600).

2019 Norris Trophy Odds

Sports Betting Dime

One of the great feel-good stories in recent NHL history. Calgary’s Mark Giordano stunned the league by winning his first Norris Trophy at age 35, a longshot at the start of the year who played his way up to outright favorite.

The Flames captain anchored one of the league’s best teams in 2018-19, and the betting market spent the season catching up to what Calgary already knew. The chart above tracks his climb from afterthought to award winner.
